Stalked by Shadows Page 32

We were a little slow moving though. Micah really didn’t do mornings. Even after a full pot of coffee, he wanted to cuddle with me on the futon, but it was Wednesday and he had to work the shop today and host an evening ghost tour.

“What about the cemetery tour?” I asked him.

“It’s daytime only now. Once per week per tour guide. I’m the only one certified right now, though there are a few others who have applied. So that tour is always full.” He touched my face, running his fingers along my cheeks, which he’d been doing a lot in the past twenty-four hours. “I looked for you every time I went in there.”

“Don’t dwell on it,” I said. “Weren’t you the one who said that?”

He sighed and stretched. “I don’t want to start the day.”

“Maybe you should call in. Tell the boss he needs to get his ass up and open the shop,” I joked, wondering if Lukas even knew how to open the shop.

Micah smiled. “More likely it would be Sky.”

There was a knock on the door that made us both frown. I untangled myself from Micah and made my way to the door, a bit surprised to find Detective McKnight standing there.

“Mr. Caine,” He greeted me. “Your brother told me you were back.”

“And I already talked to the police in Atlanta at length,” I said. “I don’t know anything about what happened to Sarah or the other tour guides.”

“I’m not here about that.” He held up his phone and tapped the screen. It was a video. It looked like me, a scruffy, hobo-looking me, wandering around an airport. “I have questions about where you were for the past month.”

“Me too,” I said. “Because I have no fucking clue.”

“Do you know where this video was taken?” He asked.

“I’m assuming Atlanta since that was where I was found. But I also had no ID on me, so I’m not sure how I would have gotten on a plane.”

  “LaGuardia,” Detective McKnight corrected.

I blinked at him. “New York?” How had I gotten to New York and then Atlanta? “When is the video from?”

“A little over a week ago.”

“But how…” I was so confused.

“That’s also what I’d like to know,” Detective McKnight said. “There’s no record of you ever taking a flight. And the cameras seem to glitch a lot at LaGuardia since this is the only video there of you that we can make out.”

“I’m not sure what to tell you,” I said. “I don’t remember the past month.”

“I’d like you to come down to the station, answer some questions, and review some other footage we have of you.”

That sounded ominous. “Am I under arrest for something?”

He gave me that fake cop smile. “We would appreciate your cooperation.”

“But I’m not under arrest,” I clarified.

  “No,” he agreed.

I glanced back at Micah who now stood behind me. “Can we meet you at the station?” Micah asked.

Detective McKnight frowned. “I’d prefer he come with me now.”

“I’d prefer to show up with Lukas at my side,” I said. “Since he knows the law better than I do.” And maybe an attorney because something was giving me bad vibes.

“Fine. I expect you in one hour.” The tone implied that if I didn’t comply, he’d set an APB or some other cop shit on me.

“One hour,” I agreed. Micah was already dialing Lukas. I shut the door wondering at that moment how I could so thoroughly forget an entire month of time, that I would need videos to tell me where I was. Had I truly forgotten? Or maybe it was that I wasn’t the one at the wheel. The latter idea scared me because it was beginning to feel like a real possibility.
