  “Put it on, sweetling,” he said, slipping the sparkling loop over her finger. She barely had time to admire the ring before he lifted her up in his arms and threw her in the backseat of the car.

  He threw himself in next, and Cecily saw there were two blankets this time.

  One beige-and-gray plaid dead-body blanket.

  And a new plaid blanket: pink and white.

  “Love you, baby,” Shane whispered.

  “Love you back,” she said.

  The last thing Cecily caught, before Shane’s mouth drove her absolutely crazy, was the wide, easy grin on his face and the sound of him laughing. Happy.
