Killing You Softly Page 19

by Khara Campbell

Cass’s hand snakes out from under the covers and latches onto my arm, the death gripe she gives me is my confirmation. “Ohhhhhhh, aaahhhhh!” She moans. “It’s…it’s time!” She manages to say through the pain.

I snatch the covers off jumping out of the bed. My heart is galloping in my chest. We’ve done birthing classes, I went to all her doctor appointments, but I feel completely clueless right now. I’m running around the bedroom trying to put some clothes on.

“Cage.” I turn to the sound of Cass’s voice. “Those are my sweats.”

I look down and sure enough I have one foot in her hot pink sweatpants.

“I have clothes for you near the hospital bag in the closet. I had a suspicion that something like this would happen.” She smiles, her hands clutched protectively over her belly. She’s now sitting up in the bed. “Hurry before I get another contraction, they’re coming fifteen minutes apart. And throw me those sweatpants.”

God I love this woman. She’s the one in labor and she’s trying to help me keep my head straight.

Ten minutes later we’re in the car heading to the hospital. It’s 2:36 in the morning which means the roads are clear. I call Cass’s doctor letting her know we’re on our way to the hospital. Next I call Cherese, I know she will let everyone else know what’s happening.

I’m positive I got my wife pregnant on our wedding night. We didn’t come up for air for three days straight. I couldn’t get enough of her then and the same is true now. Mrs. Cassandra Brown is my world. And she’s about to make me the proudest father.

The wail of my son is one of the best sounds of my life. My eyes are overflowing with tears as I watch the doctor hand him over to the nurse. The nurse walks over with him so Cass can kiss him then she allows me to do the same before taking him to get examined and cleaned up.

I lean down and kiss Cass on the lips. “You’re doing great baby. He’s so beautiful.” A light flash from a camera. I look up and see that one of the nurses captured our picture. I asked her to do so because I knew I would be too emotional to capture anything.

“Okay mom, we’ve got one more in there,” the doctor says bringing our focus back to her.

Cass looks up at me with wide eyes. I reach for her hand giving it a gentle squeeze. “You got this babe. A few more pushes and we’ll get to meet our baby girl.” She nods and I swear my love for her grows even more.

We didn’t get pregnant with triplets like we’d talked about and hoped for. But we’re not disappointed. We’ve truly been blessed and we give all glory to God.

Moments later our daughter is brought into the world wailing just like her brother did. Our son Caden weighs 6lbs 2oz. Our daughter Chloe weighs 6lbs exactly. Both perfectly healthy. Soon the room is filled with family and friends. Cherese and her Fiancé, Rick, are here. I wasn’t happy about them dating in the beginning, but they both are heads over heels in love with each other. And I want them both to have what Cass and I have. My dad is also here grinning like a proud papa. And Cass’s sister Claudia is here. A couple months after our wedding, Cass and I went about locating her family. We were only able to find her sister Claudia in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, working at a department store. She’d thankfully gotten herself cleaned from drugs. Unfortunately, Cass’s parents and her brother all died from drug related complications. Cass convinced her sister to relocate to Atlanta where she now has a condo not far from where we live. Over the past months they’ve been working on building a relationship, which so far has been going well.

Our babies are being passed around. I’m watching everyone like a hawk making sure everyone washes their hands with soap and water and not just use hand sanitizer before touching our bundles of joy.

“Thank you for giving me two beautiful babies,” Cass tells me. I turn my attention from the group in the hospital room to her. She looks absolutely gorgeous having just went through hours of labor and giving birth to twins. I’m about to make everyone bounce so my queen can get some rest.

My lips find hers instantly. I feel her hand at the nape of my neck drawing me closer.

“Damn Cage, she just gave you twins and you trying to get her pregnant already?” Comes Rick’s voice followed by laughs.

I continue to kiss my wife despite what he says. I’ve been waiting for moments like these with Cass for far too long to not give in to all my desires to be near her. Kiss her. Touch her. Love her. Always!

  The End!

OMG! This book was a real challenge for me to write. But I enjoyed every moment of creating these characters. Cass, she’s my shero. If you have been following my journey as an author, you know this novel is so much different from my other books. It’s a bit grittier and has a lot of action. But you may also know that I love challenging myself and trying different genres. With that, I’m anxious to know what you think about this suspense, thriller, romance. Please leave me a review on Amazon and or Goodreads. It’s very helpful to me to know what my readers think because it helps me to improve my craft, so your opinion is greatly appreciated.

  Thank you much!
