“Okay, I might’ve told him that we were having a girl,” Laz admitted.
“You don’t even know what we’re having. How…” Journey paused and glared at him. “I can’t believe you!” She swatted his arm. “You already know, don’t you?”
“I couldn’t help it. I wanted to know. I’m not as patient as you are.”
“I can’t believe you went behind my back and found out,” Journey complained, shaking her head. After feigning annoyance, tears filled her eyes, and a slow smile lit up her face. “We’re having a little girl,” she whispered in awe, cupping his cheek with her hand. “Are you okay with that?”
Laz turned his head slightly and kissed her palm. “I’m better than okay with that, baby.” He didn’t care if it was a boy or a girl as long as Journey and the baby were healthy.
“But I don’t want a godsister,” Dominic chimed in, folding his arms across his chest and looking as if someone told him Christmas was canceled this year.
“What’s wrong with having a godsister?” Laz asked.
“Because Dee said I have to share my treehouse with my godbrother or my godsister. I don’t want no girl in it. She’s going to mess it up and put stupid dolls in it,” he said with disgust.
“Man, you don’t have to worry about that,” Laz assured, squeezing Dominic’s shoulder. “My daughter is going to be into basketball, trucks, and water guns. She won’t—”
“Laz!” Journey glared at him. “Why would you tell him that?”
“What? It’s true.”
“Cool!” Dominic pumped his fist in the air. “Then she can hang out with me and my little brother.”
“You don’t have a brother, sweetheart,” Journey said, still scowling at Laz.
“But I’m getting a broth…” Dominic stopped suddenly, a look of terror on his face as he glanced at his parents. “Oops…sorry.”
All eyes turned to Hamilton and Dakota.
“Something you guys want to tell us?” Laz asked, amused by his friend’s expression. Clearly, Dominic wasn’t supposed to say anything.
“There’s not much to tell since a certain somebody can’t keep a secret.” Hamilton shook his head, but Laz didn’t miss the excitement on his and Dakota’s faces.
“We didn’t want to infringe on your celebration, but…we’re having a baby…a boy!” Dakota squealed.
Cheers and congratulations went up around the room, and Laz couldn’t have been happier for his friends. The best part was that their kids would grow up together.
An hour later after most of their guests had left, Laz walked up behind Journey and wrapped his arms around her, his hands resting on her baby bump. “You doing okay?”
“I’m great,” she said turning in his arms to face him. “You have to admit that the party was wonderful.”
“I’ll admit, I had a great time, but that’s always the case when I’m with you.”
“I feel the same way, and soon it will be the three of us. I’m beyond excited for this next step in our lives.”
“Me too, baby. It’s only going to get better from here.”
There were still moments when Laz had a hard time believing his good fortune that Journey was in his life, and he looked forward to seeing what else was in store for them.
