Chapter 1
“Mumblephnow?”
He took his toothbrush from his mouth. “What did ye say?”
I was sitting on the counter facing him. I giggled, dripping some toothpaste down my chin, my mouth full to spilling over, and giggling more. “Mumphleynoo. Lumneychon. Sphewskinnly.”
His brow went up. “I haena any idea what ye are sayin’.” He continued scrubbing the brush back and forth on his teeth and watching me.
“Sluuberlimnery.”
He shook his head slowly and squinted his eyes. “Ye are nae usually so...”
I spit. Wiped my chin. And pretended to be exasperated. “I said, Lumneychon.” And then laughed so hard I snorted.
Magnus laughed along with me. He spit and we passed a cup of water back and forth and both spit in the sink again.
He put his hands on my thighs and stood between them. “Twas fun watchin’ ye race today.”
“I came in sixth place in my wave.” I stretched. “And every muscle is so sore I may not be able to walk for three days.”
He shook his head slowly, sadly. “Twas nae the way ye raced. Ye splashed through that muddy pit with the skill of a warrior and took the prize as far as I could see.”
“You’re the best. I’m really glad to have you home. I mean, I know it’s been a week but...still, we were moving our house through most of it.”
He pulled my hips closer. “Tis good tae be home. Though it’s a new home, you are in it.”
I wrapped my ankles around his ass and pulled him closer. Leaned back on my hands, a smile and a raised brow. “Are we going to play here on the bathroom counter?”
Magnus smiled and looked around at the space, bright lights, giant mirror, cold surfaces. He said, “I daena ken if I could enjoy ye while starin’ at myself.”
“And we do have that big amazing bed to play on, you can enjoy me properly.” I giggled again and slid off the counter, took him by the hand and pulled him down the hallway to the waiting bed. I climbed on and shoved all the decorative, damask, piped, brocaded pillows off to the carpet and sprawled caddy-corner and grinning. I was wearing a tiny midriff baring T-shirt with a pair of butt-cheek baring panties and quite proud of how cute I looked.
I could see it in his eyes — he was growing used to me in that loving husband kind of way, comfortable, but all I had to do was bare some skin and he was really really into me. Or wanted to be into me. I giggled again, so happy, and sprawled back as he dropped his uncomplicated modern kilt to the ground and climbed naked onto the bed beside me.
“So what next, Master Magnus?”
“I was thinkin’ ye could introduce me tae your toys.” He kissed me behind my ear on my neck.
My eyes grew wide. “I showed you last year.”
His brow went up and his smile widened. “Ye showed me one toy, twas quite modest in size and function. I was surprised by it, I thought on it a great deal, but now I ken ye have a much larger collection.”
“Magnus, you were gone for a whole year, so yes, I bought more, and have you been looking in my underwear drawer?”
“Aye, Madame Campbell, I missed the sight of your wee undergarments in all their splendid colors, laying clean and fresh in rows tae be worn. I find them tae be marvelous and there are so many now.” His hand rubbed down my side and up under my shirt. He fondled my breast.
“I kind of got into a thing where I kept buying underwear while you were gone....” I arched toward his fingers.
“So I was lookin’ at your undergarments and there beside them were more toys I haena met yet.”
“You’re serious?”
“Aye. “ He grinned.
I said, “Are you sure? They don’t freak you out? They are for when you aren’t here, occasionally to play with when you are here — you are so much better — more fun. I don’t want you to be worried about your manliness or anything.”
“Have ye seen my manliness? I am nae worried.”
I laughed, “Good point. Okay.” I crawled across the bed to the dresser. I stood in front of my drawer and wiggled my butt for his viewing pleasure.
Magnus moaned happily.
I grabbed my three favorite toys and returned to the bed and dropped them beside him. “These are the only ones that matter.” I sat cross-legged on the bed. “This is Pokey. Pokey meet Magnus, Magnus meet Pokey.”
“What dost ye do with Master Pokey?”
“Oh really, you can’t tell?”
“Nae, I can tell. Twas wantin’ tae hear ye say it.”
“You were gone a very long time. This is Nyum-Nyum.” I held one that was small and curved in the palm of my hand.
“What does Master Nyum-Nyum do?”
I grinned. “Oh Master Nyum-Nyum does anything you want him to do.”
“Aye.” Magnus said simply.
I picked up the last, it fit on my palm too. “This is Eva. I met her on Facebook.”
“What is Facebook?”
“That is unimportant, Magnus. The important thing is — Eva.” I pulled my T-shirt off over my head and tossed it to the side. “I haven't been able to use her the way she is meant to be used.” I stood up on the bed above Magnus and stripped my panties down my legs and kicked them to the side.
“She is a Mistress for ye? What does she do?”
“Guess.” I
dropped down to the bed, flat on my back, arms above my head, sprawled.
He held it in his hand above me. “She is the color green and would fit upon your ear, though I daena think tis the purpose.”
He pressed it to my ear and I laughed.
He dragged it down my face to my nose. “Twould fit here, but for what fun?”
“I’ll give you a hint. You have to turn her on.”
He rolled onto his back and fiddled around with it for a moment, pressing and twisting, until it hummed to life.
“Am I goin’ tae jump through time?”
“No, but we might have a little out-of-body experience.”
“We? Verra interestin’.”
His face was growing more serious. His breaths growing quicker. I could tell he wasn’t as jovial anymore — more focused, more determined. He pressed the humming toy to my lips and slowly dragged it down my neck to my collarbone. I watched his face as he concentrated. His eyes taking me in. His lashes lowered on his cheek as he pulled the vibrating toy along my breast to the peak of my nipple and paused it there, watching. I arched toward it without even wanting to, wriggling and squirming to meet it. If he drew it away I pulled toward it. If he pressed it down I wriggled with it. Slowly it traveled down my stomach and across the curves of my pelvis and down, touching between my legs.
“There,” I said with a breath.
His eyes closed. “I ken, but I daena...” I lowered a hand to fit it against me, nestled in my labia. His fingers followed it, and dipped inside me checking the placement. “Och, aye,” he said and pushed my arms over my head and climbed onto me.
He winced a little, movements like this were still sore on his ribs. He kissed me and he flattened on me, a lovely pressure, holding me down, collected and settled, up on his elbows beside my shoulders. His hands resting on my arms, keeping them up above my head. He pushed his hips and himself, up and into me.
He exhaled in my ear. His voice low and rumbling against my skin, “I feel it.”
I let out my air like a sigh as he filled me and the humming vibration played against me, almost more than I wanted, but oh, I wasn’t going to — he held himself there, still and heavy and insistently inside me, filling me. I turned my head and with licks and nibbles pulled his thumb into my mouth and sucked it deeper against my tongue.
Magnus moaned and pressed his temple to my jaw, and we waited, pressed to each other, the intensity growing and spreading from between my legs and warming up my body. I adjusted my hips to press against him, pulling him in deeper.
He groaned low and deep almost a growl. Intense and tense.
My lips around his thumb, my mouth full, his other hand moved to my breast and squeezed.
The only thing on our bodies moving was my tongue flitting around his thumb, the vibration between my legs, his breath warm on the pulse point of my throat, the pressure of his fingerprints on my skin.
“God,” he whispered and that syllable drove me to the edge.
My breath caught — ogodogodogodogodogod — I plunged over the falls and submerged under, as waves rolled up from between my legs through my stomach, I felt myself tightening and pulling and demanding and with a roar in my ear he rose up, held my hips and slammed against me over and over and over until he finished and collapsed down on my body.
The only sound was our panting breaths.
“Oh my god, that was awesome.”
He rolled off me with a wince to his back beside me.
I pulled the toy from between my legs and turned it off.
“Och, aye. Every inch of ye was movin’.”
“Really?” I laughed. “I thought I was completely still.”
“You canna be when you are naked. Ye are writhin’, corrachag-cagail, mo reul-iuil.”
I curled up beside him, my head on his chest, his arm around. “Remind me what that means?”
“A flickering ember flame.” He yawned.
“Oh.” I kissed his chest. “I like that.”
He pressed his lips to my forehead and said, “Aye. I need tae get up and check in with the guard.” He sat up with a groan and then gave me a satisfied pat on my hip. “Stay here in bed I might...”
Exactly like Donnan patting me on the hip when he was finished with me before rising to dress. A memory flashed in my head — his shoulder butting against my mouth, his back bucking against me as he died.
I shoved his hand away — whose hand? “No no no no.”
“Kaitlyn?”
I scrambled up, shaking my head, no no no no —
Kaitlyn?
I pushed my body toward the headboard and clung to it — nonononono — my bare legs a moment from being dragged down the bed. I pulled them under — nonononono
“Kaitlyn? Are ye okay?”
My hands clamped over my face. I curled in a —
“Kaitlyn? Look at me.”
“I can’t. I can’t it’s too...” I shook my head. “He did that. He patted me like that. He — oh god.” I sank onto our pillows and tried to hide from him. If I hid he wouldn’t be able to find me... I pulled a pillow around my face.
Magnus’s voice, “Kaitlyn,” sounded from very far away. “Tis me, Magnus.”
He said it again and it took a moment more before I managed to say, “Magnus?”
“I am right here, mo reul-iuil, ye daena need tae be afeared.” He lowered down beside me on his stomach, facing me. “Daena be afeared, mo ghradh, is ann leatsa abhios mo chridhe gubrath.” Fingertips softly brushed my hair from my cheek and tucked it behind my ear. “You daena have tae be scared.”
I grasped his hand.
“You are safe, mo ghradh.”
I pulled my head up to see his eyes. Magnus. His eyes full of worry. I tucked his hand to my lips. “I’m sorry.”
His brows drew down. His eyes squinted in concentration. His I’m-trying-to-understand look. “You daena need tae be sorry.”
He sat there for a long moment quietly watching me.
He sighed long and rolled with a wince to his back and lay there naked, sprawled. Staring up at the ceiling he asked, “I ken it, Kaitlyn, but ye need tae say it tae me — he forced himself on ye? He was able tae before ye killed him?”
I clutched his hand to my face and didn’t answer.
“I needs ken the whole truth of it. It needs be out in the open.”
I concentrated on his fingernail. “He did. The first time was when I was coming out of the pain of time-jumping and I don’t know how long I was there — or what happened before. I don’t remember when he cut my face. So I don’t know... The last time was when I killed him.”
I watched the side of Magnus’s face as he stared at the ceiling. His eyes darted back and forth, working out something, thinking it through.
“I told you that you didn’t want to know.”
“Tis a lot tae hear.”
We lay there quietly for a few moments.
“Were ye — did ye... I am askin’ if ye were takin’ your pills... If ye still are.”
“I was. I am. I don’t think there’s any reason why I should be—”
“When would we ken?”
“I could probably know in a few days? Maybe a week?”
“Good. If ye are... I daena...”
“I can’t be, Magnus. It would be so...”
“Aye.” The corner of his eye glistened. He spoke to the ceiling. “I daena ken what I have done tae ye, mo reul-iuil. I have brought so much despair tae ye.”
“You warned me.”
“Aye, but I also promised ye I would protect ye. And I haena lived up tae—”
I kissed his fingers and crawled from my position on the pillows, to his side, collapsing under his arm, over his chest, snuggled, afraid of his words, the words of defeat, terrible words, scared words, final kinds of words.
I clung to him. “I don’t think that’s what you promised me.”
He lifted his head and looked down at my face. “I did. I promised ye protection.”
&n
bsp; “That’s not what I heard. What I heard was that you would live your whole life always trying to protect me. That my life, my safety, would always be your first thought. And you haven’t let me down Magnus, you have kept your promise to me. I know it. I’m scared when I think about what happened to me. I’m terrified when I think about what might be coming, and my brain is just like hiccuping right now, showing me things at really dumbass times. But when I think about you, here, I know you will always do your best to try to protect me. Because that’s what you promised.”
“But I am the son of Donnan. The son of Mairead. I have killed men for entertainment. What if I am nae the man who deserves ye?”
I circled my finger around on his chest. “You aren’t his son. Or hers. You are my husband. Before god.” I slid my thigh across his waist and his hand held it there. “We can’t talk about deserving.” I pulled his opposite shoulder up to turn him toward me and wrapped around him, legs entwined, arms wrapped, hands caressing. “Deserving is a deciding word. It’s insecure, unstable... those kinds of words don’t describe us anymore. You and I are decided. We are one, my love, stronger together.”
His voice came from near my shoulder. “I am worried that I may have it inside me — an evil that I canna rid myself of.”
