by Rainer, Marc
“There are many lawyers, I’m sure, who want to be ‘the next John Grisham,’ but few, if any, come close to Grisham’s greatest attribute: the ability to tell a fascinating story incredibly well. It’s frankly hard to believe this is Marc Rainer’s first novel, the writing and storytelling are so good. The characters in Capital Kill are well-drawn and three-dimensional, but it is the story itself—a young federal prosecutor seeking to bring Jamaican drug gang leaders living in the United States to justice—that is so compelling. The story has all the marks of someone who has seen all this ‘up close and personal.’ As a lawyer, I generally stay away from books about lawyers—mainly because the stories aren’t really that interesting. Marc Rainer—like John Grisham—is an exception. Highly recommended.”
“This is an enthralling and fascinating read. My favorite aspect of this book is the internal dialog of the assistant federal prosecutor. After all, how many TV crime/legal dramas have we all watched during which we have only been allowed to wonder what the thoughts and reactions of the prosecution (to the defense, to the defendant, to the witnesses, to the jury) are? The ending is ‘blockbuster,’ and the entire novel would make a terrific full-length film. I highly recommend Capital Kill to any reader who enjoys this type of genre.”
“The reason other reviewers keep using the word ‘gripping’ when describing Capital Kill is the same reason I use it here: Marc Rainer’s prose grabs the reader’s attention from the start and doesn’t let it go. Whether it’s in his characterization of good guys Trask, Lassiter, Carter, Ramirez and Co. as they wind their way through Washington’s labyrinthine criminal justice system; his description of calculating, ice-cold serial killer Demetrius Reid; or as he recounts the dying eyes of Reid’s terrified victims, Rainer weaves a web of intrigue that will have you turning ‘just one more page.’”
“Rainer is so good that you will find yourself questioning the line between fiction and reality. The author’s experience and writing skill will wrench your emotion, challenge your imagination, and leave you wondering how much of this he has really lived.”
“Wow, what a novel! Fascinating read that kept my interest from start to finish. Too bad I can only give it five stars. Trask is my newest hero!”
