For British women travellers to Europe around the time of Jane Austen (and before and after), Ladies of the Grand Tour by Brian Dolan is a pleasurable read. Many travelled with just one or two companions, although as Jane points out to Elizabeth, they are mostly either wealthy or eccentric.
For more on historical English travel to France, The British in France: Visitors and Residents since the Revolution by Peter Thorold, has a great variety of first-person observations, some of which I nicked and adapted slightly for some of Elizabeth and Lydia's observations.
And of course The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy remains the great cross-Channel Revolutionary French historical romance, and was a great inspiration for some of the intrigue.

Thank you to my husband, for being so understanding about all the time I spent hiding behind the study door or at the library. In particular, thank you for doing so much of the washing up.
Thank you to my dissertation supervisor for not asking too many questions when I wondered aloud about some of the issues in this book. I'm getting back to work now, I promise.
Thank you to the helpful community of writers who cheered me on. This is my first ever full length novel and I could never have done it without you.
Thank you to Jane Austen, for creating these wonderful characters, and thank you to you, the reader, for buying this book. I truly hope you enjoyed it.
