  For British women travellers to Europe around the time of Jane Austen (and before and after), Ladies of the Grand Tour by Brian Dolan is a pleasurable read. Many travelled with just one or two companions, although as Jane points out to Elizabeth, they are mostly either wealthy or eccentric.

  For more on historical English travel to France, The British in France: Visitors and Residents since the Revolution by Peter Thorold, has a great variety of first-person observations, some of which I nicked and adapted slightly for some of Elizabeth and Lydia's observations.

  And of course The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy remains the great cross-Channel Revolutionary French historical romance, and was a great inspiration for some of the intrigue.
