Emma Page 14

by Peggy McKenzie

Viola wasn’t about to wait to have regrets. She ran up the stairs, lighting the oil lamp at her desk and pulling a sheath of scented stationery from her drawer. She began to write,

She sealed the envelope, intending to mail it first thing in the morning. For all she knew, Viola may get there before her letter. After securing a ticket in the morning, she was going to have her trunks sent ahead to Angel Creek and prepare her mother for her departure.

Viola opened the window in her bedroom, hanging out over the edge and lifted the telescope, pressing one end to her eye. She adjusted the lens until she caught a star in the glass. A delightful sigh escaped her. In the city, it was hard to see much. She couldn’t wait until she was out west, over the Rockies, where the sky meets the land. Even if she has to marry someone, it was probably worth the trouble.
