  Grace

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.   Faith

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)

  Hebrews 11; Romans 10:17; 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3; Hebrews 12:2

  Little Faith

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. (Matthew 17:20)

  See also:

  Matthew 8:26; Matthew 14:29-31; Luke 12:27-28

  Much Faith

And being not weak in faith, he [Abraham] considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. (Romans 4:19-20)

  Acts 6:5; Acts 11:22-24; 1 Corinthians 13:2; 2 Corinthians 5:6-7; Ephesians 6:16

  Healing Faith

But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. (Matthew 9:22)

  See also:

  Matthew 9:28-29; Mark 10:52; Acts 14:9-10

  Saving Faith

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. (Galatians 2:16)

  Love

  God’s Love for Us

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. (1 John 4:9-11)

  See also:

  John 3:16; Romans 5:8; Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 5:2

  Our Love for God

We love him, because he first loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? (1 John 4:19-20)

  John 14:15; 1 John 2:15; 1 John 4:16; 1 John 3:10; Matthew 6:24; Matthew 22:37-39

  Love for One Another

For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (Galatians 5:14)

  1 Corinthians 13:4-13; John 13:34; John 15:12-13; 1 John 4:7-11; James 2:8; Philippians 2:1-5

  Fear

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. (Isaiah 41:10)

  About the Author

Joe Keim was born and raised in Ashland, Ohio. He married Esther Keim in 1986 and they left the Old Order Amish community in 1987. They have two grown children, Jonathan and Rachel. In 2001, Joe left his job as a tool and die maker for full-time ministry. The Keims travel all over the US, speaking in churches, as well as to hospital staff, to law enforcement, and at colleges, helping people understand how to communicate with the Amish.

Through personal witness, home Bible studies, home prayer meetings, the Bible Club, The Amish Voice, and the Audio Ministry, the Keims want to see every Amish person hear the clear message of salvation. MAP offers counseling and protection to those who are victims of sexual, mental, and physical abuse. The ministry also provides help with needs such as getting a GED, obtaining a birth certificate, and finding a job. Through the Bible Club alone, they have seen more than 2,500 Amish make commitments for Christ.

  Photos

All fourteen of us children were born and raised in this two-story house, which still stands to this day. For years, my grandparents also lived in one part of the house.

  Our barn.

An aerial view of our home place. If you look close enough, you can see the pond where we trapped muskrats and swam many nights after all the chores were done. This is not, however, the pond where Leander drowned.

This is the shop where I got all my machining and welding experience. In later years, after I left the Amish, my training led me into tool and die making, where I learned to build progressive dies. My company sent me to Chicago for training on EDM Wire and Sinker machines. I also learned how to run CNC equipment and draw up prints with AutoCAD.

Our kitchen and dining area. It was in this area where all our family gathered around the table three times a day for meals. Notice the dark curtains, which were mandatory.

This photo shows my horse, Mike, pulling the two-wheeled cart I built. Crist Byler and I went to school together. He left the Amish at 18 and joined the military. When Crist got out of the military, he stayed in the state of Washington.

This photo was taken when I was 18. The car, a Monte Carlo, was my first. It was during the most difficult and darkest time of my life.

  Joe at 18.

This is where my wife, Esther, grew up. It is also the place where we lived for nine months before leaving the Amish for the last time.

These photos were taken when Esther was about 18 years of age (before our wedding day).

These pictures were taken about three months after our wedding day in 1986.

Up until the day we drove into their driveway with a horse trailer full of our belongings, we had never met nor heard the names Jerry and Carol Gess. We were complete strangers to each other. But from day one, they have made us part of their family.

This picture includes the four Keim brothers who are no longer Amish. Joe and Esther, William and Jenica, Johnny and Miriam, Perry and Maryann, Jonathan and Havilah, David and Rachel, our granddaughter Lily, and nieces and nephews.

This picture was taken the day Rachel vowed to remain sexually pure until h
er wedding day.

This picture was taken of Samuel Girod the day after he left the Amish and moved into our home. He owned two properties and was in a partnership business with his dad. When he left the Amish, all he had with him were the two duffle bags in his hands.

This photo was taken the day we parked our cars a mile away from the family reunion, walked to sister Ella’s house, dressed in Amish clothes, then walked across the field to join our first Keim family reunion. It shows our family, my brother William and family, Johnny and family, and Perry and family. This took place in July of 2008, twenty years after Esther and I left the Amish for the last time.

  Esther and Joe today.
