His life didn’t look the way he’d thought it would when he was growing up. But then again, he’d never really spent much time daydreaming about his future as a child. He honestly figured his father would accidentally kill him one day. Or injure him so bad that he’d slip into a never-ending coma. Either way, his future had always defaulted to the bleak.
But his current reality was quite the opposite. He was surrounded by people he loved, and people who loved him—all the time. Pen meant so much to him, it was hard to think about it sometimes. Like, if he thought about it too long, he’d get emotional. He’d never loved someone the way he loved her. Maybe Jasper. He loved the shit out of his twin.
They’d grown close over the last year or so, but the second Jasper had pulled the trigger ending Franklin’s life? Their bond had gotten stronger. His brother sacrificed part of himself, and Jace would never forget it.
Sometimes he pinched himself, sure that this was all a dream and he was really still living under his father’s iron fist. But then he’d wake up and come downstairs to find Pen making coffee. Or Baze would toss him a baseball and start talking about possible batting rotations. Every weekday morning, they would pile in one of their cars and drive down the mountain, watching the sunrise on their way to campus. Pen would kiss his cheek and he’d walked into class and take his seat between Riley and Jasper.
And Jace would take a deep breath, letting himself relax, because it was always in that moment, the moment when he got to be nothing other than a teenager annoyed with a pop quiz, or a less-than-stellar grade, that he finally felt awake.
