CAPTAIN ANDREW HICKENLOOPER
Considered a rising star among the Federal army’s engineers, Hickenlooper is rewarded for his exceptional service at Vicksburg by a gold medal from the command board of McPherson’s Seventeenth Corps.
He rises to the position of judge advocate under Grant, and assistant inspector general for Seventeenth Corps. At the war’s end, he is awarded a brevet rank of brigadier general.
Returning to his home state of Ohio, Hickenlooper serves as president of the Cincinnati Gas Light Company, becoming a noted expert in the field of public utilities. He enters politics, and in 1879 serves as that state’s lieutenant governor. He dies in 1900, at age sixty-three.
ADMIRAL DAVID DIXON PORTER
Foster brother to renowned admiral David Farragut, Porter serves the United States Navy to high honors through the end of the war, notably as commander of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. In late 1864, his contribution to the fall of the Confederacy’s last major seaside bastion, Fort Fisher, brings him an official letter of thanks from Congress, his fourth such accolade.
After the war, he serves a five-year stint as superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, at Annapolis, Maryland. He is promoted to full admiral shortly thereafter, the title made retroactive for his service throughout much of the war.
Penning his memoirs, and numerous other publications, he is regarded as one of this nation’s finest naval officers. He dies in 1891, at age seventy-eight, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
