“Any civilization that has survived beyond its early stages would have learned that if you are the strongest, you don’t have much to worry about. However, there is always someone stronger who wants to take what you have. For a society that has developed to the point of interstellar travel, the lesson is that to stop violence and bad behavior, you must stop them from within yourself. A human rule applies here, the Golden Rule. I found evidence of the Golden Rule with the Te’Hat; perhaps we will find something like it in the new contact species.”

  “Amen to that!” Alex said.

A wine bottle, glasses, and a plate of cheese appeared on the coffee table. Levi poured the wine for the three of them and raised his glass. “A toast to the Unknown. May her path be lit so we may discover her secrets.”

“Why do humans choose the female gender to describe unisex objects?” Alice wondered.

“It’s a human thing.” Levi smiled. “Don’t spoil it.”

Alice raised her glass and smiled. “Then, to human perseverance.”

“To human perseverance!” The two humans repeated.

The Atlantis lumbered its way out of the system at intra-planetary speeds, heading toward the destiny that awaited what was left of humanity. Levi felt good the Te’Hat had agreed to keep some humans on their planet. If things went sour for the Atlantis, they would be the last of their kind. Humans were already an endangered species. Levi prayed the universe would have a few kind words left to say about the children of Earth.
