Smokejumpers 2 Werebear: Bear Shifters Page 7

by Kim Fox

“Don’t kill him Keene,” Amanda said. “Unless you know how to make wine.”

“I still don’t know how you drink that stuff,” Alexi said.

Amanda smiled at her. “You just have to like pain. A lot, a lot of pain.”

Amanda and Alexi had become good friends in the past month, since Beckett regained his alpha title. Amanda had apologized for being a bitch and the two made up. They discovered that they had a lot in common and had been inseparable lately.

Alexi was the one who got them a new plane. Some life insurance money came in from her fiancee’s death and she bought the crew a brand new Casa 212 as a thank you for all they did for her.

Quint looked at Beckett with wide eyes. “You’re the alpha. Get this mountain off me.”

Beckett glanced at Ellis. “You’re the new number two. You deal with it.”

Ellis stepped into the kitchen to diffuse the situation. Keene looked almost double his size and Amanda wondered how he was going to get that hippo off of Quint.

  “Go Elly!” Alexi cheered.

“What are you going to do about it Elly?” Keene asked teasing him. Quint was gasping for air under him.

“A move that has been passed down from the elders. A dangerous move that can collapse even the biggest man, using just one finger.”

“Just do it already,” Quint complained between labored breaths. “I’m drowning under here.”

Ellis raised his index finger. “The tickle monster.” He dug his finger inside Keene’s armpit and Keene sprung off of Quint and ran out of the kitchen giggling.

“What’s the matter with you?” Keene said, pissed off. Quint rolled on the floor gasping for air. “You don’t tickle another man.”

  “Nice work Elly,” Alexi clapped.

“Enough shenanigans,” Sander said, opening the oven. “Lunch is ready.” The smell of cooked sausages filled the outside air.

The guys climbed into the picnic tables with Beckett sitting at the head. Keene squeezed beside Amanda, digging his elbow into her shoulder. “How come I get stuck next to The Incredible Hulk?” she complained.

He looked down at her. “I’ll sit on you next,” he warned.

Amanda placed her bread roll in front of him. “Please don’t.”

Sander served the lunch: Italian sausage and bell pepper paella. Amanda’s mouth watered as he filled her plate.

She smiled at Beckett. She had never been so happy and content in her whole life. She loved these people like a family. And she was utterly in love with Beckett.

Beckett glanced at Matteo’s empty seat. “His seat will be here for him when he decides to return,” he told the crew a few weeks ago. Nobody was allowed to sit there.

Beckett seemed happy and content with Amanda, but there was a hole in his heart since Matteo left. Amanda knew that he blamed himself.

There was even a rumor that Matteo had joined the Flint Crew of all places. Beckett never brought it up but Amanda could tell that it was eating away at him.

“Bon appetit,” Sander said. They always waited until Beckett took his first bite before eating. He lifted his fork to his open mouth when the fire alarm blared.

Forks and napkins flew as the guys jumped up from the table. “My paella,” Sander whispered, staring down at his overflowing plate. He grabbed a piece of sausage and sprinted to the hangar.

Alexi was the only one still sitting at the empty table. “Want to be my co-pilot?” Amanda asked.

Alexi’s eyes lit up. “Hell yeah!”

The two girls ran to the hangar and jumped into the cockpit. Beckett was on the satellite phone with the park ranger’s office as the guys suited up in the back of the aircraft.

Amanda fired up the engine and performed her safety checks.

Beckett hung up the phone. “It’s a big one,” he said. He leaned in the cockpit, between the two seats. “Amanda head to Bear Mountain.”

Amanda taxied the large plane out of the hangar and headed for the runway. “Welcome to Amanda and Alexi Airlines,” she said over the speaker. “The sexiest airline in the world.”

The guys hollered in the back.

Alexi joined in. “Our destination today is a tropical one. The hot and sultry Bear Mountain where a lovely playground of blistering fire awaits. The weather at your destination is burning and searing but not nearly as hot as your two pilots in the cockpit.”

“When we arrive at your destination please don’t forget to leave any axes, knives or chainsaws on your seat and please leave your chairs in the upright position,” Amanda said. She stopped the plane at the beginning of the runway, did some last checks and hit the throttle.

Her copilot, Alexi, cheered and slapped the dashboard as the plane took off down the runway.

Amanda pulled back the yoke and the plane lifted into the sky with her favorite people in the world cheering behind her.

  The End

  epilogue

Finch stepped out of the pickup truck, took a deep breath and looked up at the building before him. McCoy Industries. The last time he was here a black bear almost bit his arm off and Ellis lost an eye.

Finch glanced back at the door of his truck. It was dangerous being here, even with his brothers, but he had decided to come alone. He wasn’t here to start trouble. He just wanted to talk to Matteo.

The crew hadn’t been the same since Matteo left over a month ago in June. There was a void and Finch was going to ask him to come back and fill it. Matteo did make the world’s worst alpha but he was a great second and the tribe was stronger with him.

Finch was always closest to Matteo and thought that he’d try to talk some sense into him.

He walked up the parking lot and two members of the Flint Crew stepped out of the mill. They stood in front of the door in the distance with their legs spread out and their arms crossed.

“Well if it isn’t Winnie the Pooh,” the one with the sleeve of tattoos said. His name was Clay. “Come back for another ass kicking?”

Flint remained calm. He wasn’t here for a fight. “I’d like to speak to Matteo.”

“Where are the rest of your Smokelumpers?” the other one, Ryder, asked. They burst out laughing and gave each other a high five.

“That’s the best you got?” Finch asked, with his hands in his pockets. “How about Smokechumpers or Smokedumpers?”

Matteo opened the door behind them. “What do you want Finch?” he asked, walking past the goons.

“You say the word Matteo,” Ryder said, “and we’ll stomp his ass.”

“Shut up,” Matteo said, waving them off.

“It’s good to see you Matteo,” Finch said, when he stopped in front of him. “The crew misses you. Especially Beckett.”

  “But he sent you.”

“No,” Finch said shaking his head. “I came on my own. He doesn’t know I’m here.”

“Well what do you want?” he asked.

“Come back,” Finch said. “You don’t belong here.”

Matteo chuckled. “I don’t belong there anymore. These are my brothers now.” He glanced back at the mill and the two goons were lighting a grasshopper on fire with a lighter. He turned back and stepped to the side, blocking Finch’s view of them.

“They seem great,” Finch said sarcastically.

Two more goons walked out from the side door. “Is that a Hudson bitch?” one of them yelled.

“You better leave,” Matteo said. “These guys can get nasty.”

“Is there anything I can say that will make you come back?” Finch asked.

Matteo shook his head. “I’m staying here.”

  Finch exhaled, defeated.

He gave Matteo a hug. “I tried. Your cabin is waiting for you if you change your mind. It was good to see you.”

“You too,” Matteo said. “I’m sorry I was such a dick when I became alpha. I didn’t know how to act. It wasn’t me.”

“I know,” Finch said slapping his shoulder.

  Finch nodded and turned b
ack to his car. A woman, that Finch had never seen before, turned around the corner into the entrance of the parking lot.

Finch dropped his keys and stared, unable to move. His bear grumbled and whined as he stared at this gift from heaven.

She was breathtaking. She was wearing a summer dress with hibiscus flowers painted on it and her brown hair was tied back in a ponytail.

This is what it feels like to bond to another.

The world around him began spinning and became blurry. Only she was in focus. She was a werebear as well. He could smell a bear inside her.

She met his eyes and dropped the stack of books she was holding. Her mouth dropped and her purse slid off her shoulder onto the ground.

The reaction was deep and intense and only lasted a second even though it felt like an hour. Their bears had bonded. They had chosen each other.

They had never spoken one word to each other, he didn’t even know her name, but he understood that they would be together forever.

“Jessica!” a deep voice screamed. “Get over here!”

She stumbled forward, never breaking eye contact with him.

Finch felt two strong hands seize his shoulders from behind. “Finch that’s the boss’ sister,” Matteo said. “Get out of here. Now.”

This was Kai’s sister? He bonded with his enemy’s sister?

Finch heard footsteps behind him but he still couldn’t move. It was worth dying to watch this beauty for a few extra seconds. Matteo picked him up by the waist and ran with him to Finch’s truck. “Snap out of it,” Matteo said, dropping him and slapping him across the face.

Finch sparked back to reality. The world stopped spinning.

Matteo handed him his keys and looked over the truck. The guys were running over, with Kai at the head. He looked pissed.

Finch took one last glance at his new love, dove into the truck and fired up the engine. He raced out of the parking lot staring into his rear view mirror at the curvy beauty, muttering one word over and over again.

  Jessica.

  Jessica.

  Jessica.
