In truth, the change was there.
“Jimmy.” Cody put a hand on his shoulder. “You get dead and we’re going to have an issue.”
“I don’t plan to get dead, brother.” He returned the shoulder squeeze before backing up a step and putting his hat back on his head. Behind him the stable doors opened and Cody’s gaze flicked to Shane.
“You sure about him?”
Not giving in to a second smile, Jimmy nodded. Cody really couldn’t leash his protective instincts. “He’s a good kid. Keep everyone else safe. I’ll be back by next summer.”
A year was a long time, maybe he’d make it back sooner, but if he caught up to Ryan, he had a second mission. One Cody would understand. Someone needed to take out MacPherson and Jason had given Jimmy a wealth of information on the man.
“Watch your back. And don’t do anything stupid,” were Cody’s last words on the subject.
Taking the reins from Shane, Jimmy climbed into the saddle and watched his brother walk away. “Can’t really do that since I’m leaving all the stupid here with you.”
Laughter floated back on the breeze. Jimmy waited as Shane closed up the stable and mounted.
“Last chance, Shane. You don’t have to go.”
The younger man gave him a lopsided grin. “I think you need a little more stupid in your life.”
It was Jimmy’s turn to laugh and he nodded once. “All right then, let’s ride.”
They turned their horses away from Haven, the Flying K, and Dorado. Their trail would take them north and away from the Kanes and the Morning Stars. Jimmy refused to look back. If he never returned, his last memories wouldn’t be of riding away.
The long, hard road stretched out in front of them…
