“I don’t know how I’m going to introduce you to my parents.”
“Happily, I should think,” he said, and she lightly swatted at him.
“No, I mean, they’re going to be awful to you. ‘When are you getting married, where’s our grandchildren’ kind of awful.”
“Ah.” Kallen nodded slowly. “You said that you felt pressure to get someone the older you became.”
“They didn’t help with it,” she said. “But whatever, I just had to deal with it a few times a year.”
“I get it. Maybe hold back a bit until we’ve been doing this for a while. See how things turn out.”
“I hope they turn out well.” Claire meant it. She hoped they’d be together for longer. Too soon to hope forever, but that could remain as a dream to aim for. Shannon and Rita would love to keep drilling her about him, and although the immediate threat from his family was over, she did have to conclude that being with Kallen might not be the easiest choice.
But it was a choice she wanted to make. They both deserved more out of life. So why not each other?
