She held up a finger. “Wait.” Honey pulled out her phone and sent a text. A few moments later, Trixie appeared.
“Harmony!” She pulled me in for a hug. “I hoped you’d make it.” Her gaze slid down my figure. “Banging dress. Now tell me why you two weirdos are being so secretive.”
I pulled them in close and whispered what I’d found out.
Honey and Trixie both pulled back, their faces ashen. Honey was the first to recover. “You know … that makes a lot of sense.”
Trixie shuddered. “I knew,” she admitted.
“What?” we both exclaimed.
“It’s a long story and I don’t have time to tell it right now, but I knew awhile ago. I just wasn’t sure what to do about it.” Trixie chewed on a perfectly manicured nail. Her dress was emerald green. It skimmed over her hips and poofed out into a princess ball gown.
“We figure out why,” I said.
Both girls nodded their heads but looked longingly back at the sea of well-dressed students. “But first we enjoy prom?” Trixie said hopefully.
I grinned, feeling like I had a purpose for the first time in a long time. “Yes, first we enjoy prom.”
Honey linked her arm through my right and Trixie took the left. I wasn’t sure what the future held, but I knew these two girls were in it with me, come whatever may.
As for me, the secrets of the Merlin Academy lingered in my mind, but I pushed them to the back to make room for the first real fun I’d had in ages.
It was prom. I was a Rook living in plain sight in a magical prison, but there was punch to be drunk and cute boys to ogle.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was the Merlin Academy.
For today, I could enjoy this.
But tomorrow, our silent battle would fully begin.
