“But that was a good thing,” Rod said.
“What if you had an enemy? A really nasty type. And you knew you could harm or even kill him? Or a business rival that you could give a horrible dose of bad luck to, so that your own business would prosper. The possibilities are endless.”
“I see what you mean. It’s an unnatural power and it could leads to terrible temptations. But Omar was a psychopath.”
“I had the potential to be a black witch even before I received some of Omar’s evil dark sorcery. But I think Omar’s power might try to lure me to wickedness, like wanting that silly expensive necklace. If I gave in, even one time, the evil power might grow. Next thing you know, I’d want an Aston Martin, or a cute little chateau in the Swiss Alps.”
Rod got up and began removing plates from the table. “You’re a natural healer, a good person. That’s an innate trait and I love it about you.”
Michelle followed him into the kitchen. “Perhaps giving in to black magic would change me. Make me into someone you wouldn’t like. Although you were right about the random acts of kindness. If I can tally them up, a pile of good deeds, maybe I have the potential to end the desire to ever do something evil.”
Rod was smiling. “Like toting up brownie points? Or in your case, tallying up random acts of kindness and benevolence.”
“Exactly.”
Epilogue
Rod searched for the perfect ring for Michelle. Since they had decided together it would not be a diamond, because Michelle had the huge magical diamond, Abigail, Rod found there were many beautiful alternatives. He finally chose an Alexandrite stone, which is a dark sparkly blue. He thought it fitting because this precious and expensive gem can change colors under certain lights, becoming pink, red, or purple.
He kept it hidden until the ceremony.
The wedding was wonderful, and small. Mike made a white wooden lattice for the minister to stand in front of when he performed the ceremony. Heather filled the lattice with flowers: roses, orchids, plumeria, and hibiscus.
The wedding guests sat on chairs in the grassy backyard at Mike’s house. Everyone was there. Vincent, the professor, had made another trip from California just to see his favorite witch get married. Leilanie was seated in the front row with Shelly, Ivory and Petal, because they were small and wanted to be able to see everything. There were some friends from work. Guy had come from his airfield, across the island.
Close family attended; Michelle’s parents and her brother Bobby from San Francisco. Rod’s father was there from the Napa Valley. His mother came all the way from Japan to see her son married.
Heather was maid of honor. Mike was best man.
Michelle’s father walked her up to the minister and gave her away.
The ceremony was short and sweet. Rod presented Michelle with the beautiful ring. Michelle gave him a gold wedding band.
Afterward there was a lavish catered feast for the guests, which was also outdoors in the garden. Everyone enjoyed the grand celebration with music and dancing.
Five months later Michelle gave birth to a healthy baby boy, just as Leilanie’s young daughter, Petal, had predicted. He was perfect and strong, his parents agreed; the light of their lives. Even Lucifer purred when he was around the baby.
In the months that followed, there were subtle changes that everyone on the island of Oahu noticed. Food banks were filled to overflowing. The homeless found shelter. There were generous contributions for hospitals and various charities.
The traditional Aloha Spirit of the gentle Hawaiian people of peace, compassion, and generosity seemed to grow and get stronger.
Only a few people realized the cause of this transformation. It was a beautiful black haired witch and her three daughters. They were piling up brownie points, and gold stars, so they could continue to enjoy their witchy powers without falling into darkness.
Omar, the Necromancer, disappeared. His whereabouts remain unknown.
