Everett made a point of being with me when I told Hayden what had happened. My mom comforted him. He was sure I had something to do with her death at first. I felt so guilty, but I made him go to the police station and they told him what really happened on that roof. Slowly, we’re getting back to being us as a family. I never thought anything could tear us apart, but Margie gave it the old college try.

My mom apologized over and over. I couldn’t let it get between us; I knew what kind of person Margie was and even I had believed her lies at one point. I wouldn’t let some psycho come between us anymore.

Looking around my new office, a sense of pride fills me, and I smile. I’ve come a long way since Hicks Life Solutions and Terry Hicks. After the storm blew over with Margie, Terry asked me to take my job back, saying that he needed me. But I just couldn’t stay in that building after everything that happened. Everett severed all business ties and any kind of alliance he had with Terry, for me. I didn’t want him to cut ties because I didn’t want his business to suffer, but he assured he’d done well enough without Terry Hicks, and with me by his side, we’d be unstoppable.

Everett asked me to join his company. He knew I didn’t want to work for him, I wanted to be independent, so instead he made me a partner. Gone was the ruthless CEO and in her place was someone who valued her clients and her staff. Of course, I brought Steven from HR with me, and offered him a nice little signing bonus in return.

My hands fall to my swollen belly. Just the thought of our baby being kept warm in there brings a smile to my lips. It’s time to grab my husband and go home.

I stand outside his door. He doesn’t know I’m here. His chair is facing the window and I listen to his side of his phone conversation. The gravelly tone of his laugh still makes me shiver. Rather than knock to alert him to my being here, I take soft steps into the room and around his desk. Once he’s said goodbye to whoever he was talking to, I go and stand in front of him.

“Hey, beautiful. Come here.” He parts his knees and I step between them. His hands rest gently on my belly as he places his lips on my belly and leaves a kiss for his unborn child. I run my fingers through his dark hair, and he tips his head, back smiling. I lean down and place my lips on his. “I love you.”

“I love you, but I’m tired and need to go home.”

“Let’s go, then.” Stepping back from him, he slides his cell in his pocket and turns off his computer. Once his jacket is on, he takes my hand and kisses me again. “Let’s go home, Mrs. Brooks.”

If the last couple of years have taught me anything, it’s that no one is indispensable. Everyone has a purpose. Every life has a meaning. It must be a sad existence if you have to go through life being jealous of others and not having the means to go after what you want for yourself.

Life isn’t a game. Life is what you make it. And I’m going to make sure that Everett, our child, and I make the very most of it.
