The nurses came to serve me some breakfast. Eggs and toast with a small serving of fresh fruit on the side. When I had completed my meal, they asked me if I was ready for visitors. I nodded my head.
My roommates came into the room and gave me a hug. They asked if they could see the baby, but I told them the nurses had taken her away to check her out.
“That is a shame. I wanted to hold the baby.” Jason was looking rather proud of himself for some reason. “I’m sure the father would like to see the baby too.”
I rolled my eyes. Jason was still hung up on the idea of David in my life. It couldn’t be helped. I would have to deal with him being around. Jason opened the door to the room.
“He was in the waiting room this whole time while you were giving birth.”
My eyes looked at the door and to my surprise, it was not David that walked through the door. It was Victor! I could feel my heart leap in my chest and tears started to flow down my face. I was crying tears of joy.
“We met him while we waited for you. He said his boyfriend was pregnant and that he was waiting to see him. After talking for a while, we found out that he was waiting for you Richard. He is a very nice man and he seems to care about you a lot.”
Jason explained it all. How they met and what they had talked about. It made me glad that Vick had finally met my roommates. I only wished that it had not been under these circumstances.
Vick came over to grip my hand and squeezed it. I smiled at him, clutching my hand into his own.
“I’m sorry about when I came to your house. I was trying to tell you about David but I was upset. I thought you had found someone else.”
Victor shook his head. “If I had found someone else, would I be here? I came to the hospital as soon as I found out from your co-worker. I didn’t get his name. He said you had come to this hospital.”
I felt Vick’s arms embrace me into a hug. I knew in that moment that he had not betrayed my trust in him. He was going to be there for me. No matter what happened. He would be there by my side.
Vick bent down to kiss my lips gently. I could feel his rough fingers caressing across my cheek. “I love you Richard Callen. Will you marry me?”
Excitedly, I nodded my head. My voice wouldn’t come out though. I was so choked up with emotion. I struggled to get the single word out. “YES!”
Chapter 18 Epilogue
Three months later, Victor and I were standing before a priest saying our wedding vows to each other. Jason and Todd were sitting in the front row as we exchanged our rings. Todd was holding my daughter Hope on his lap.
We kissed for the first time as a married couple. Our mutual families cheered for us as we walked down the aisle and back out of the church. My hand clutched firmly into Victor’s hand. This was the true love that I had been looking for all this time.
I had not been back to Victor’s place until he had fixed it up. He said he wanted it to be a surprise. It was definitely one that I did not expect. Nothing had changed except for the spare bedroom in his house. He had modified it into a nursery for our darling baby.
The walls had been painted and a new crib was setup for her. He even got a baby monitor so that we could check on her while she slept. This was the greatest thing anyone could have done for me.
Through it all, Victor had been there for me. Even when I pushed him away, he had come back. I knew that he was the one true love for me. Watching him with Hope also made it clear that he was going to be a great father. He paid attention to her and even took responsibility to care for her needs.
Victor’s home had now become our home. A place where we could care for each other. A place where we could raise our daughter with love. This was our safe haven together.
