Awaken: Book 1 (Chronicles of Ghost Company) Page 26

by Shawn Muller

The newly formed formation slowly marched forward, with Fremod in the middle swinging that massive warhammer of his side to side as we closed in on the enemy orcs. We slammed into the exposed side of the orcs, wreaking havoc on them. In their berserk state, they could not respond fast enough to our attack. This allowed us to quickly overwhelm them, routing this formidable enemy without many losses to us. By dusk, we were chasing the last of the enemy back towards Port Eire, a complete and utter victory of the enemy being achieved.

  Chapter 6 – Epilogue

“And, finally, to Commander Bob and his Ghost Company, for their valiant efforts during these games, which allowed us to, effectively beat my brother at last,” Prince Marcus said, raising his goblet of wine in my direction.

I raised my goblet in return, nodding thanks in return.

“I would like to personally thank Prince Marcus for the faith that he entrusted in me and the Ghosts. I I do hope that we have been able to give back something towards that trust.”

Prince Marcus led a cheer in appreciation to the thanks I sent him.

“To Queen Vickerson, I do wish to apologise to both you and Babar, for any harm I may have inflicted towards your honour leading up to the games. It was not my intention,” I said with a low bow in the direction of the orc monarchs.

“Babar. Yes we can wrestle now after the speeches.”

Babar gave me a toothy grin as he began to strip down for the fight.

“And to the men and woman of the Ghosts. Well done. You have beaten my expectations and have made me very proud. To many more victories!”

Max led a loud HOORAH! As the Ghosts downed their drinks.

We were sitting in a huge tented area with all the commanders from both armies. The past few days after the final battle were bit of a blur. Both armies met at Port Eire for the final feast. We was greeted by those of my men who had lost their “lives” during the various skirmishes and fights, as heroes, but no sign was found of Vinant who seemed to have disappeared as soon as he appeared here. Both friend and foe greeted us openly as worth combatants, newfound respect showing from many of the enemy troops. I was, we all were very surprised by this. Each leader came during those days to congratulate us personally on our feats, some bringing gifts.

Babar brought me his war axe as a sign of respect, and I let him beat me thoroughly during the wrestling match. Prince Owyne gave each of us a horse from his personal stables. Lord Manirie brought promises of elven-made bows, arrows and eternal friendship and support. Bruniks pledged his support and a promise to join us on our journey to Dwarfinaan, as well as to send more Elves to join my company. Prince Marcus ecstatic to say the least, he promised more funding, hell, he would give me the moon if I asked for it.

All in all, the battle was a success in terms of our development. As a team, we were on the right track. With a few minor adjustments, and more troops, we would be the premier fighting force for Prince Marcus. But for now, we would enjoy the feast, the ale and the break before heading off on our next mission.

Cotus Myhym turned off the view screens.

So far so good he thought to himself. Now to turn up the heat so to say.

He turned and looked at the training schedule laid before him and nodded.

This will work yes. It may be tight in the end, but this will work.

He turned back to the view screens his finger lingering at the on button as he contemplated his next move.

  The End.

  About Shawn Muller

As a wise man once said, I was born at a young age to a mom and dad in a small town called Heidelberg, South Africa not Germany.

After living in Palaborwa for a few years, my parents moved from the middle of the bush to the coast and an even smaller town called Richards Bay. It was here where I grew up and decided to put pen to paper and write my own story.

I had grown up reading Roald Dahl, Edith Blyton and Edgar Rice Burroughs Venus Series. A friend of mine introduced me to Terry Pratchett and David Eddings, and so began my adventure into the fantasy and sci-fi realm.

By grade eleven I had read most of Raymond E. Feist, Terry Pratchett, David Eddings and David Gemmel’s books as well as a few other sci-fi books.

Thanks to an over active imagination whereby I would imagine myself in the books helping out the main characters, and a very boring English teacher, I began to write my own book. I wrote during most of Grade Eleven and Twelve English classes and managed to churn out two chapters, as well as an idea for a PC game or two (I am an avid gamer much to my wife’s chagrin).

After school the writing process slowed down to a few pages a year as I began to work, study get married and begin an electrical apprenticeship. After I qualified, I tried a few times to carry on with my own writing process while reading many more books and playing many more games.

One particular summers afternoon, my wife and I were taking a walk around the local neighbourhood as a family, and I was feeling rather sorry for myself for some reason or other, and it was at that point that my ever logical thinking wife told me to stop snivelling, pull my finger out of my butt and get finished with my book.

I read what I had written whilst I was in school and promptly decided to rewrite it. It was simply to childish and made no sense. Most of the storyline I kept, adding many new ideas to the original and getting down to the nitty gritty of actually planning a proper detailed story.

I had by this time discovered Robert Jordan, Steven Erikson, George RR Martin, John Ringo and John Scalzi who all became my new favourite authors and in many instances, inspiration for my book, and a delay in finishing it as I lost myself in their worlds, something which I hope will happen when others read my books.

Just over 4 years later, and I have finished Awaken, my first fantasy fiction book.

It has been an interesting process to reach this point, and I have learnt so much as well in terms of actual writing. In the meantime, I have begun planning the next few books in the series, where I want to take Bob and his Ghost Company while I enter the dark and mysterious world of self-publishing….
