“Your presence has been requested, Mr. Evans,” Terry, Kelsey’s head of security said with a jump of his shoulders.
Drea accepted Legacy with no arguments. “Quill, who are these people?”
“I’ll be back when I'm done handling business,” I said, stepping back into my room, and dressing with haste. “Don’t tell anyone where I went. It’s for the safety of both of us.”
Legacy let out a grunt of indignation to match his mother’s. “You're doing business with someone else? After all I've done for you—”
“After all you’ve done for you,” I cut her off. “Let’s not forget who wins whether I'm dead or alive.”
We stood there, staring each other down, willing the other to break. It was Terry who broke it up, rapping on the door for me to hurry up. Drea motioned for me to throw on my last piece of clothing, the hoodie I wore whenever I was about to get down, a steadily growing smirk on her face.
“I guess now I'm not the only one with a secret.”
“What's that supposed to mean?”
Drea laughed as she bounced her baby in her arms. “It means that my secret is likely to get me a tap on the ass for embarrassing my daddy; yours is likely to get you a tap to the dome. These people may rent you, but I own you.”
“Own my body; the shit is damaged as it is. You'll never own this,” I said, pointing to my brain. “You can take my life, but you’ll never be able to take what the streets have taught me. Run and tell my brother that.”
Defeating Drea twice in one day felt good. Every step I took had weight in it, the feeling of my chest caving in disappearing as I breathed for the first time since getting tied up with the Winthrop family. My relationship with Kelsey wasn’t perfect, but with Drea in the know we would be close to. The high hopes I felt were crushed at my arrival to her apartment. It was trashed: the kitchen table was flipped over, glass littered the floor, and bullet holes riddled the walls, television, even the bedroom wall to my left. Behind it was a pool of blood, dark red from lack of age.
“Briana,” a voice said from behind me. Urban stood there, hands clasped behind his back, his expression calm though I could hear the fury interlaced with his words. “They rushed her to the hospital. It’s not looking good for her.”
“Kelsey—”
“Was taken. By who, I have no idea. They slipped by her security under the premise of being moving men. Shot the place up and took her out in a U-Haul.” Urban approached me, and for a second I thought he was going to take a swing at me or somehow make this my fault. He extended a hand, his eyes never leaving mine. “You’ve proven it on numerous occasions. I've heard you claim it was well, but I need to know if you love my daughter like you say to do.”
I nodded. “I do. Kelsey is my heart.”
“Good,” Urban said, and with his other hand he extended a pristine Glock. “Then help me bring her home.”
