“Here you go, sweetheart,” I said, handing Clay his room temperature cocoa.

“There’s something I’ve been meaning to give you,” I said to Clay. I sat down, pulling the box from my pocket and setting it onto his lap. “I know we weren’t doing gifts this year, but it’s just the perfect opportunity. I’ve been waiting for weeks.”

He put his drink down and looked at me, “This better not be expensive, you knew I was eyeing that watch you wanted!”

He slipped the blue ribbon from his gift, slowly tearing off the wrapping paper. He took the cover off, exposing a ten-week ultrasound.

“Elliott…” he said, tears welling up in his eyes. Clay almost never cried.

“Are you okay?” I asked tentatively, putting my hand in his lap. I was so nervous.

“Am I okay?!” he blurted. “Elliott, this is the best Christmas present I’ve ever gotten.”

Clay grabbed me by the waist again, this time picking me up and swinging me around, placing a firm kiss on my forehead. Myles looked up at the display in front of him. Excitedly, he crawled towards us, zipping across the floor in a matter of seconds, his red onesie rubbing against the carpet.

“Is it a boy or a girl?”

“As if I would find that out without you being there! We can find out at my second ultrasound, together, just like we did with Myles.”

I giggled excitedly, wrapping my hands around his thick head of hair. I kissed him on the lips as I slid back down to the ground. We stood there for what felt like forever, holding each other in the warmth of the living room, our hands resting on each other’s backs. The moment was serene.

“Believe it or not, I have my own little secret.” Clay smiled at me as he brushed my cheek with his fingertips. He got on one knee. “The two of us never were any good at keeping promises, were we?”

With a wink, Clay took a small box from his pocket and handed it to me. I covered my face with both of my hands, tears streaming down my cheeks. I tried to muster any sort of response, but after several attempts of sob-filled gibberish, Clay took matters into his own hands.

“Elliott, will you do me the honor…” He took the ring from out of its case, the gold sparkling against the glow of the Christmas lights, “of being my husband?”

The only response I could manage was a loud “Yes!” as I jumped into his arms. He kissed me softly at first, wrapping his hands around my neck. He slowly started to kiss me more firmly and purposefully, pulling me in tighter and tighter. Slipping the ring onto my finger, Clay looked at me tenderly.

“I love you so much,” I whispered.

  “I love you too, sweetheart.”

I wiped the tears from my eyes and settled my head onto Clay’s chest. I always seemed to fit perfectly. I looked over at Myles, staring up at us with his hand stuffed in his mouth. He slid back onto all fours and crawled towards us, grabbing his father’s leg with his slobber-covered hand. Clay and I looked down at our son. His dark brown eyes were filled with a youthful joy. Using Clay’s leg, Myles hoisted himself up onto his tiny little feet, taking a few seconds to balance himself.

“I’ll never get tired of seeing him stand, it’s the cutest thing.”

“Just wait until there’s two of them,” he said with a smile, kissing me lightly.

Clay gasped and looked down at Myles. He had let go of his leg, and after a quick stumble, had managed to take a few short steps away from us.

“Take your phone out, Clay! We have to record this!”

Clay sprinted to the bedroom. “Shit, shit, shit, shit!” he yelled, “I don’t know where my phone is!”

I grabbed hold of Myles’ hand, helping him stay steady on the rug. By the time Clay had come running back, my phone in hand, Myles had tumbled back to the ground, donning an ever-present grin across his chubby little face.

“Damn, I must have just missed him.”

“Don’t you worry, knowing Myles he’ll be running around this house in a matter of months.” I giggled, a few stray tears streaming down my face.

Clay and I sat down with Myles, holding each other’s hands as he played with his dump truck. Clay laid his hands across my belly, holding me close.

“I can’t wait for the second one,” Clay whispered.

“Don’t get too ahead of yourself, right now you have to focus on marrying me.”

We sat back down onto the couch, watching Myles play with his Christmas gifts. My hand slid onto Clay's thigh and he kissed me on the cheek. I saw Clay’s eyes wander back to the ultrasound photo.

“This Christmas is going to be pretty hard to one up, I think.”

Clay picked Myles up and sat him on our laps. In just under a year, Myles was going to have a sibling and his parents would be married. Clay may have proposed, but the real gift was the smile he put on my face every single day.
