“Lie?” Max asked. “What lie?”
Nightshade’s eyes were full of sadness. “The lie that none of it was real.”
Then she left, the door swinging shut behind her. Max stared for a long time after she’d gone, then sighed and went to lie down again. As he did so, something suddenly dug into his back. With a yelp he shoved his hand behind his back and his fingers closed around something hard and cold.
He brought it out, his eyes-widening as he took in the object sitting in his palm. It was a silver hand, one finger crooked as though beckoning to someone. The Claw of Destiny.
Oh, god, Max thought.
He’d won the game. He’d made it home. But he had the feeling that this was only just beginning.
