by Meg Farrell
“Well, that’s something I never got around to telling you. I picked up the truck from my office in Memphis this morning.”
My mind seems fuzzy, definitely not enough coffee. “Your office? You own Miles Construction?”
He nods. “Opened right after Katrina. I helped repair houses from New Orleans to Jackson and do general construction all the way up to Nashville.”
“Shut the fuck up.”
He laughs. “What?”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“What was I going to say? Plus, you love me for me, not my company or money. It’s not like I’m some cushy office executive. I work with my men on job sites. I’m very hands on.”
“Well, I knew that. You are always hands on.” I smirk.
“Is this a problem for you?” he asks.
“Not if it’s not a problem for you. I may just laze about the house now. No reason for me to find a job in spite of spending all my money to pay off the house.”
“Oh, I don’t know, maybe you could be my home office administrator and webmaster?”
“You have really lost your mind.” I reach up and check him for fever.
“You don’t think we can work together?” he asks.
I think for a moment. “We work well together.” I smile and steal a quick kiss. Cade grabs me and hauls me up off my feet, kissing me silly and spinning me around in circles. I laugh. It is a light laugh that makes me feel alive.
He sets me down and smiles like he can’t ever get enough of me. I know I can’t get enough of him. I never thought we would be here. I turn to see my whole family standing on the porch. They are smiling approvingly. I know they love him too.
I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m sure of one thing: I have found my feet. I have found a place to stand.
