Maddie watchful, anxious when she saw Annie tired, worrying that she was not liking her job, fearful she would lose heart and become depressed again. Rejoicing when she looked happy once more and laughed about things that happened at work, cast down when she was snappy and refused to talk. But always aware of her moods and her needs and her feelings, and liking to be that way.
Maddie laughing, watching silly television shows with Annie and Joe, as they ate Chinese food Joe had brought with him, teasing each other, making jokes. Feeling warm and safe and so right about where she was that sometimes she laughed when there were no silly television shows. She didn’t need them.
Maddie wondering, as she saw Joe and Annie so comfortable together, hoping nothing would come to change things and spoil it all, the way it was. Annie was hers now, her person, her passion, her own responsibility, Joe would get in the way and –
Maddie learning. Not the way to be, frightened and jealous. Each week with Joe, having their session, talking of all that had happened, where she had spoiled things, how not to do it in the future, learning, learning all the time, and learning most of all not to be afraid of losing Annie. Because that couldn’t happen now, even if she and Joe did get closer still.
Because now, at last, Maddie peaceful.
