Sienna’s face went red as she stood and looked at him. “I forgot”
“That is not funny.” Theo said.
I couldn’t stop laughing. “Yea, it is that funny. I think Sadie and I will leave the two of you.”
Theo grabbed a towel off the bed and tied it around his waist. “The moment has past. What are you ladies up to?”
“The party tonight.” Sienna said.
I stepped closer to Theo. “Theo, you never had a mark on you thigh. When did that happen?”
Sadie walked over, kneeling in front of Theo, not caring that he was still wearing a towel and close to his privates. “It’s the rash. It is just like mine. When did this happen?”
Theo stood up. “You girls are crazy. Get off of me. I don’t know what you are talking about.”
Sadie showed Theo the red mark on her neck. “I discovered the rash this morning.”
“Something probably bit me. What’s the big idea?”
I took Sadie’s arm. “Nothing. Nothing at all. We are just messing with ya. We should go. The two of you must have something to talk about or whatever.”
I grabbed Sadie and pulled her out of the room. “No way are we going to go to the party. He has a rash. You have a rash. I don’t want to get the rash. That is so a sign we need to stay home.”
Sadie said nothing as we ran down the stairs and out of the house and drove off. I wonder why Theo never surprised me like that. I probably would have clubbed him over the head. I just wanted to go home and read a good book. The world is a lot scarier than readying a book and being in the safety of my own home.
Sadie was quiet, to quiet.
I got out of the car and walked into my apartment. I didn’t wait for Sadie. I couldn’t help but look for a rash on me. I ran into the bathroom. I stripped and stared into the mirror. Relief rushed over me, as I didn’t have a rash, least not yet. I was starting to get paranoid like Sadie. I put my clothes back on and walked out of the bathroom, seeing Sadie eating out of a bag of chips.’
“Say something, anything.” I said, as I put my hand into the bag of chips.
“I think I never want to see a man naked again.” Sadie said.
I started laughing. “I know Thou I have to admit, that was kind of cool what he did for Sienna. Kinda fun and sexy if it was the right guy, not that we have the right guy in our lives. Still want to go to that party?”
“Nope. I want to sit on the couch, eat this bag of chips and a movie. No disappoint there or humiliation.”
I plopped on the couch. “I agree. I don’t know what I was thinking.”
Though it was pure fear that was keeping me from going to that party. I wanted to go, not dressed like Sienna was going to dress us. I would like to see Gavin, in something different than those stupid garage shirts and pants. I just need to know how well he cleans up and if he is interested in me. Why should I be the one that has to change and not Gavin? Gavin is never going to change. I know he will be wearing his garage blue shirt with his name on it. I took another hand full of potato chips, when I heard someone pounding on the door.
I looked at Sadie. “Should we answer it? Does Zombies knock?”
Sadie stood up. “Very funny.
Sadie walked over to the door. “It’s Theo and this time he has clothes on.”
My heart started to pound. “Why is he here? Open the door. Let him in. .”
Theo walked in. “What the Hell is going on and why were you so interested in my red mark? I want details.”
“It is nothing.” I said.
“It is just something that is going around on social media. It is probably nothing.” Sadie said.
“Just tell me.” Theo said.
Sadie grabbed her phone and handed it to Theo. “Watch the video.”
I watched Theo and Sadie watched the video and re-watched the video. The two of them just looked at each other.
“It is probably nothing. We have to die, before we can turn into Zombies.” I said.
Sadie walked around the living room. “What if we do die, but then we are Zombies and we can’t video ourselves because we are dead?”
“The infection could kill us.” Theo said.
“In the video, those doctors and nurses recognized their rash and put on the hazard suits. They know what is going to happen to them. We just don’t how long we have before we die.” Sadie said.
“How did the two of you get infected?” I asked.
“Don’t know. Didn’t even know I had a rash on my leg.” Theo said.
“Google newest infections.” I said.
I sat down and waited.
“Newest infection, Z” Sadie said.
“That is original.” I said.
Theo walked over and stood in front of me. I could smell his cologne. I wanted to hug him, but that would be awkward since he is engaged to Sienna. “What do you think?”
Theo stood staring at me. “I don’t know what to think. Sienna is getting ready to go to the party and I have to go with her. This is probably nothing.”
“We won’t know until one of you starts acting weird or get a fever and die.” I said.
“You are not helping.” Sadie said.
“We need to go and talk to someone who might know. Someone who is in the medical field or someone who is smarter than us.” I said.
“Eric, he is a pre med student.” Theo said.
“Call him and get him over here.” Sadie said.
I might be selfish, but I just wanted a fun weekend. I wanted to get drunk. I wanted Gavin to notice me and here I am at home with two people who think they are infected and going to turn into Zombies. I am not going to babysit them all weekend, waiting for their rash to go away or for them to die. This all would be laughable, but the thought keeps nagging at me, “What if they are infected. How did they get infected and I haven’t been infected or have I?”
Then I remembered Gavin. He had a cut on his arm. I ran my finger over his cut. Is Gavin infected? Am I infected? I looked down at my hand. No red mark. No rash. I shook my head, when Eric walked in. When did my apartment become so popular?
Eric was tall thin with wire rim glasses, and the smartest person I know. His long hair gave him bit of an edge. He carried his laptop and set it on the table. I didn’t say anything as I watched the three of them hover over the laptop. I didn’t join them. I didn’t want to believe what they believe. I just want a fun weekend. Now everyone is more interested in the internet then real life. I sat on the couch. What else what was I going to do.
Eric stepped away from the computer and faced me. “Sadie and Theo are infected. We are going to need to keep an eye on them this weekend.”
“Why are you looking at me?” I asked.
Eric walked over to the couch and sat next to me. “You are the most reasonable and reliable person I know.”
“You mean that I am practical and boring, don’t you?” I asked.
“I suppose I do.” Eric said.
“So what are we suppose to do?” I asked.
Eric walked back to the computer. “There are no reports of people attacking people yet, so maybe whoever is infected hasn’t turned yet. If that is the case, we have time to prepare ourselves for the Zombie Apocalypse.”
“You just went from a simple rash to a Zombie Outbreak. I think you have been reading many books or something. I am going to the party and I am going to drink and I am going to have fun. The three of you can stare at a computer screen all night if you want.” I said.
Sadie walked over to the mirror, staring at her rash. “My rash is getting brighter and is spreading. I don’t think this was a bug bite. I’m infected.”
I walked over and looked at Sadie’s rash. It was a brighter red and the rash was spreading with a thin red line going toward her heart. “We have to get you to a hospital. You might have a blood clot.”
“I am not going to be experimented on. If I turn, just shoot me in the head or take a hammer to my head. I am not going to the hospital.” Sad
ie said.
“Neither am I.” Theo said.
“So Eric, what are we going to do?” I asked.
Eric looked at Sadie’s rash and then at Theo’s rash. “There is no cure, if this is a new infection. The government is not going to tell us that there is a Zombie Outbreak. They will let us all die. That will depopulate the world. What if the government released something in the air and it is only a matter of time until we are all infected?”
“I am going to agree with Eric. “Theo said.
“If this is air borne then there is no hope. We might as well go to the party. This might be the last time we will all be together before we all turn.” Eric said.
“Should we warn the others?” Sadie asked.
“No.” Eric said.
“Let’s just go to the party and forget all this nonsense. I am going to get ready. Zombies. Maybe we should just all go as Zombies.” I said.
I went into the bedroom. I closed the door and fell onto the bed. I have never been this popular before. Theo is in my apartment who I thought was going to be my first husband. Eric, the smartest guy is in my apartment. Why is this happening, of all the weekends, a Zombie Outbreak has to happen this weekend? Why is it starting out as a rash? Don’t someone just die, and then wake up as a Zombie and then start eating people. This is all messed up.
I peeled off that stupid shirt with my name on it, like I want the entire town to know my name as I check them out. It freaks me out when customers call me by my name, as if we are friends, as they tell me their life story, as I care. I need to get another job; I never thought I would work at this grocery store for so long. I think I am just comfortable and don’t like change that much, but I digress.
If this is going to be my last weekend as a human, then I am going out with a bang. I don’t care if I turn into a Zombie. It is not like I have a life, but when I think about that this could be my last weekend, it makes me think, and why did I waste my entire life? Why didn’t I do anything worthwhile? Why did I just drink through my twenties? Now I am going to be a Zombie. What a waste of a life.
I looked in the mirror, and knew that if I survived the weekend, I was going to change the direction of my life with or without Gavin, Sadie or Theo. It was time for a change.”
I ran out of the bedroom and went into the closet that I stored brooms, cleaning supplies and a tool box. I tossed everything out of the closet. I looked at everyone. “Choose your weapon. I am going to go to the party and if there is a Zombie Outbreak, then I am going to take this hammer and smash it into their head, whoever it might be. Choose your weapon.”
I stepped aside holding the hammer. I swung it around. Not to heavy, but heavy enough to smash someone in the head. “Who knew I would be a Zombie killer? Better than being a Zombie.
Sadie walked over. “Don’t you think we are drawing attention to ourselves if we go to the party with weapons?”
I smiled. “They will all be too drunk to notice.”
Sadie held up a screwdriver. “I can keep this in my purse. What do you think?”
“Good choice. Once we get to Lydia’s party, we can look for other weapons in her garage, like an ax, another hammer or a machete. Stay close to me at the party. I want to know where you are at all times. If we are going to survive this weekend, we have to stick together and not let some man get us side track.”
Sadie hugged me. “Thank you.”
I walked back into the living room, and there I saw Sienna in my living room. Her long blonde hair fell past her shoulders, makeup perfect, perfect outfit, to make me envy her, but all I could think about was, “I so could smash this hammer in her head, if she turns.”
Sienna walked over to Theo. “What are you doing with that hammer?”
Theo turned to Sienna and smiled. “Zombies.”
Sienna looked around, seeing everyone with some kind of weapon.
Theo held a hammer. Sadie had screwdriver, Eric had a butcher knife from the kitchen and I was holding a hammer.
Sienna walked closer to Theo. “Where’s my weapon?”
Theo handed Sienna wrench. “Aim for the head. Always aim for the head.”
Sienna took the wrench. “Kinda heavy. I like it.”
“Why are you here?” I asked.
“Sienna held out her arm. “I’m infected.”
Theo took her arm. “How? You didn’t have that an hour ago.”
Sienna took her arm back. “I don’t know. I was getting ready and I noticed it and it just got brighter and bigger and now it is covering my entire arm. Why is my rash larger than any of you?”
I looked closer at Sienna’s rash. “This makes no sense. We know each other, but not that close that we could have all been at the same place to be infected. It has to be air borne. It is only a matter of time before everyone is infected if this is true.”
I saw someone standing in front of the window. Someone who I didn’t recognize. “Is that blood?” Theo, answer the door.
Theo didn’t move. “I don’t think so. Blood oozing from the nose. Lips are black. Could be a Zombie. We are safe in here. I am not going out there.”
I took a deep breath. In a crisis, everyone’s true colors come out. They might act tough, but when the shit hits the road, they run and hide. I walked over and opened the door. I stuck my head out the door. “Sam? What are you doing?”
“I don’t feel good. I was wondering if I could borrow some cold medicine. I ache all over and my head is throbbing. I have a ringing in my ear.”
I didn’t want to invite him into the house. “Go back to your apartment. I will be over in a minute. I will heat you up some soup and bring some cold medicine.”
“Thank you.” Sam said.
I walked back into my apartment. I sat down, still holding the hammer. I felt nothing. I wasn’t afraid. I wasn’t scared. I was numb. This could not be happening to me. It took a Zombie Outbreak for me to become popular. No one ever came over to my apartment and suddenly I had friends, knowing they were not really my friends, they were just scared and didn’t want to be alone. We were already becoming a hoard and not even knowing it.
What am I suppose to do now? I have four people in my apartment. Three of them think they are infected. One thinks he has all the answers and my neighbor might be turning into a Zombie. I just want to go to Lydia’s party. I keep looking down at my hand where I touched Gavin’s cut. Am I infected? Will I turn? At the moment it didn’t matter to me. I was thinking about Gavin. Was Gavin infected? Will I have to kill Gavin?
I looked over at Sadie, knowing I needed to protect her. If she is going to turn, then I am going to have to kill her. How many people am I going to have to kill tonight? I should have never complained about having a boring life. Be careful what you wish for.
