A short while later, she noticed Isaac leaving the bakery. She had looked through the window and saw him talking to Abigail and her heart sank. Sadie had said that he wasn’t interested in courting Abigail, but this was the first time Elizabeth had seen him approach her. Maybe he had changed his mind. It wasn’t surprising really, Abigail was very sweet and lovely.

Isaac came back into the bakery just then and smiled at her. Elizabeth looked away. She was afraid he would see the sadness on her face. She told herself that if she truly cared for Isaac, then she should be happy for him.

“Do you have a few minutes to talk?” Isaac asked.

“Jah, sure.” Elizabeth wiped her hand on her apron and followed Isaac out the back door.

Isaac stopped at the table with a serious look on his face.

Elizabeth thought it might be easier for him if she brought it up. “I saw you talking to Abigail.”

  “You did?” Isaac seemed surprised.

Elizabeth tried her best to not appear sad. “Jah.”

Isaac seemed relieved. “I’m happy for you.” Elizabeth forced herself to smile.

“Why are you happy for me?”

Elizabeth started to feel confused. “Because of you and Abigail.”

Isaac shook his head but he was smiling. “Nee. I told Abigail that Simon was hoping to speak to her after church. She seemed happy to hear that.”

Elizabeth nodded and then looked up. “Abigail and Simon?”

“Jah. You thought I liked her?”

  Elizabeth shrugged. “Perhaps.”

  “Nee.”

Elizabeth felt hopeful again, but only nodded.

“Abigail is nice, but I’m interested in courting someone else.”

Elizabeth’s heart sank again and she looked down at her hands. “I see. So what did you want to talk to me about?”

  “You.”

“Me?” She looked up at him.

“Jah, you. I wanted to know if you’d like to uh…maybe go for a buggy ride after church next week?”

Elizabeth was so surprised. Finally, she nodded, and almost whispered, “Jah, I would like that.”

“Are you sure?” Isaac looked a little concerned.

“Jah. I’m happy and a little surprised.” She smiled. “I didn’t think you would ever see me as more than Daniel’s sister or Sadie’s best friend.”

“Nee.” He shook his head and grinned. “You are sweet and wonderful all on your own.”

Elizabeth’s heart swelled with joy, and tears began to build up behind her eyes. “Danke, Isaac,” she managed to whisper, as the tears began to fall down her face. “You, are a very wonderful, caring person, yourself.”

She silently gave thanks to God. Dear Gott, thank You for all You have done for me, and for giving me the desire of my heart—the person I so deeply care for. You brought him into my life in a brand new way.

  * * *

A few moments later, Kathryn called Isaac and Elizabeth into the bakery. “Daniel wants to speak to us all.” They walked in to see everyone gathered around. Daniel and Naomi were standing near the front entrance.

Naomi motioned them forward. “Come in, come in!”

Isaac and Elizabeth moved around the counter and went to stand next to the others.

“As you all know, Naomi and I are getting married next week.” He paused as everyone congratulated them. “Danke. We are very happy and looking forward to the wedding. We have a lot to do to get ready. Naomi and I will be taking the next few days off and we will not be here at the bakery.”

“We’ll keep it running for you, boss,” Tyler said from his usual spot by the ovens.

“Jah, don’t you worry,” Marianna added.

“Danke. I’m very grateful.” Daniel looked around the room.

“Daniel, dear bruder, we are all grateful for you,” Elizabeth said. “You have done such a great job at turning the bakery around.”

Kathryn agreed. “You certainly have, Daniel. I’m amazed at the work Gott has done in you. I have seen Him give you new strength and determination to follow His will.”

Daniel shook his head. “But along with Gott, it was all of you that helped turn the bakery around, as well. It definitely was not just me. It was Mamm teaching me everything about the bakery, Lucinda’s cooking experience, Tyler’s baking, and Elizabeth, Naomi and Marianna helping out early on and coming up with ideas. But also, Joshua’s delivery service, and Susan, Matilda, Sadie, Jessica and even Isaac for pitching in when we were short-handed. The bakery would never have been so successful if it weren’t for everyone who has helped out.”

Naomi wiped some tears away, as did Elizabeth, Kathryn, and the others. Daniel looked a little emotional too.

With that, Daniel thanked them again and openly prayed to God, thanking Him for each one of them and for all He had done to make the bakery a success.
