White Out Page 5

He looks deep into my eyes. “Yes, I do. We’ve always had that connection, from the moment we met.”

I know he’s right because I couldn’t deny it if I wanted to.

“So, my sister actually did a good deed for once, huh?” I ask.

“Oh, it took me a long time to get it from her. It’s not like she just said, ‘Sure,’ and texted me the picture. I had to pester her for it but you’re worth it.”

“Amy, you’re the luckiest bitch I ever met,” Sierra hugs me again. “I’m so happy for the two of you!”

“Thank you,” I laugh at her.

“But you have to promise me that I’ll be your maid of honor. Nobody else! I’m the one that hooked the two of you up!” She says.

“I wouldn’t dream of asking anyone else. In fact, I’ll even let you take charge of my bridal shower,” I tease.

“Gee, thanks,” we laugh. “But you know I’ll be more than happy to do that and anything else you need.” She turns to Greg, “And just so you know, you’re not just getting Amy. We come as a package deal so you’ll never get rid of me.”

“That’s great! She’s got the big, bitchy sister and the annoying little sister,” he jokes with her.

“Damn straight, she does!” Sierra proudly announces. “And I’m the most awesome little sister that anyone else could ask for!”

“Yes, you are,” I wink at her. “We’ll sit down after Greg and I figure out dates to start making arrangements. Thank you for everything, Sierra. You’re the best!”

  Epilogue

It’s been three wonderful years since I met Greg, and in that short time, I’ve finished nursing school and gotten married. We talked about having kids but we decided what’s the rush?

Instead of making babies and changing diapers, we’re living our best lives by spoiling each other with vacations and weekend getaways at private bed and breakfasts. I know my mom would’ve loved to see her grandchildren before she passed but she’s gone. There’s no sense in having one right away.

“Your tickets, please,” the flight attendant asks.

Greg shows her our tickets as we board the plane.

“I can’t believe we’re going back to where it all started,” he says. “It’ll be nice to go back there and finally have a chance to teach you how to ski.”

I laugh because I’m one of the clumsiest people on the planet. “Are you sure you want to spend our anniversary in the hospital?” I joke. “I don’t think it’d be very romantic.”

Wrapping his arm around me, he pulls me close to his chest. “Baby, I’d spend our anniversary anywhere with you, and you’ll do fine,” he kisses my forehead.

In a few short hours, we arrive in Colorado and somehow, in some crazy way, it seems more majestical this time. The snow is just as white and it’s just as cold, but it holds more promise than last time. Maybe because I know I’m spending this trip with my other half—my better half. He completes me and makes me whole.

My life is so much better with Greg in it and I’m glad that he wouldn’t leave me alone the first time we met. If he’d have given up on me, I don’t know where I’d be today. I might not have won anything in court, I might not be living at my mom’s old house, and I probably wouldn’t be with anyone.

After we check in, Greg immediately asks about the ski rentals.

“You’re kidding, right?” I ask as the clerk walks away to ask a coworker. “We’re not going until at least tomorrow, right?”

“What? We can go out now so I can show you the basics for a bit. We don’t have to do any actual skiing today but there’s a lot to learn, so I’d like to teach you a few things today so we can just go over them tomorrow before we hit the slopes.”

My jaw falls open in shock. “You’re not serious!” I say, my eyes wide with fear. “I can’t ‘hit the slopes’ tomorrow. Are you trying to kill me? Is there an insurance policy that I don’t know about?” I tease.

“No, there’s no insurance policy,” he laughs. “Although, if you’re anticipating something happening, maybe I should get one.”

“Hey!” I slug him in the arm. “What the hell?”

“I’m teasing, babe! You’ll do just fine.”

Once we drop off our luggage in our room, we head straight outdoors. We only have a couple of hours before dark but he’s determined to teach me how to put on and use all of the snow gear.

I actually don’t do too bad! At least, I don’t think so and if I am, Greg doesn’t let on. “This isn’t so bad,” I say. “I think maybe I could get the hang of this!”

“See, babe? I told you. You’re doing a fantastic job.”We spend the next hour practicing how to use the ski poles and then he convinces me to try a few small hills. “You’ve got this. Just do like I told you,” he instructs.

It’s a small hill but it looks gigantic to someone who’s never gone down one on skis before. “How do I stop again?” I ask, making sure that I don’t forget.

“Just do like this,” he says, making the motion.

“Ok, I’ve got it,” I say. Drawing in a deep breath of the crisp, cold air, I steady myself as I push off the hilltop and begin to go down the hill—holding my breath the entire time.

When I get to the bottom, I’m so disappointed. It was a small hill! It wasn’t any fun!

“What’s wrong?” He asks. “You did a great job, just like I said you would.”

“Yeah, but it was so small that it was kind of boring. I was down it before I knew it.”

Smiling at me, he says, “You were born for this. Let’s try a bigger hill so you can test some of those skills you’ve learned.”

We climb our way to a bigger hilltop and this one is much steeper and longer than the tiny one that I just went down. “Are you sure I can do this one?” I ask.

“Positive. I’ll go down it with you,” he says, pulling down his snow goggles. “On the count of three!”

  “One.”

  “Two.”

  “Three!”

We go skiing down the hill with the wind whipping against my face. I laugh and shriek the entire way. “This is so much fun!” I yell at him.

  “I told you, babe!”

When we get to the bottom, I look up at the sky and realize that it’s going to start getting dark soon. “I guess we have to get back, huh?”

“Yeah,” he says, looking up at the sky with me. “But we have the whole weekend together. Now, let’s get some dinner because I’m starving!”

  “Me too,” I confess.

Everything in the resort looks exactly as I remember it. The sleek bar is still surrounded by all of the wooden high-back chairs and all of the perfectly organized colorful bottles of liquor still sit beneath the accent lighting.

“What can I get for you today?” The bartender asks as we pull up a seat.

“How about two Overnight Sensations?” I ask.

The bartender and Greg both give me a side eye as the bartender pulls up his phone to Google the recipe.

“What’s that?” Greg asks. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it. What made you order that?”

“It’s us—two overnight sensations. We fell in love so quickly and it describes us perfectly. I researched drinks before we came because I wanted to make sure that we had something romantic to drink when we came to the bar.”

“I love you,” he says, wrapping his arm around me. “You always think of everything.”

“I love you, too. We should start coming here every year for our anniversary,” I suggest.

“You know, I’ve never thought of that but we can if you’d like,” he says as the bartender sits our drinks in front of us.

“Yeah, I’d like that,” I kiss him.
