“Do you think you’ll ever hear from him again?” Dana handed Amber a glass of wine, taking a sip from her own glass as she listened to the band play a popular country song.
“I don’t know. I hope so.” She let out a deep sigh as the image of Robbie riding away floated across her memory. Over the weeks she’d come to think of him more as Robbie Morgan than as her birth father—the man who’d help conceive her. “It’s a strange miracle we met up at all.”
“You’re lucky. You have a family who loves you.” Dana nodded toward Amber’s parents, the ones who raised her.
Amber’s mouth curved into a smile. “You’re right. I’m truly fortunate. Tell me how you like your newest job.”
“It’s good and the owners are wonderful. They keep me busy with new projects and it helps pay the bills.” She’d gotten the job at the advertising agency. That, plus continuing projects through Amber and her two classes at the college kept her busy. “What’s the deal on your honeymoon?”
“We leave in three days, and I can’t wait.” Amber waved to her brother, Jake, who stood next to Kade, no doubt talking Army speak. Jake graduated from West Point and Kade left Special Ops to join the DEA. She knew they’d bond.
“Where to?” Dana watched Mitch pick up another beer while talking to a tall, dark-haired woman she’d never seen. She winced as he threw his head back and laughed at something the woman said. For the first time she realized she’d never heard the man laugh—not once in all these months. They’d been around each other often since Robbie left town, each time tense and difficult. Dana would be glad when he left for Montana.
“I don’t know. Eric is surprising me.” Amber’s gaze settled on her husband, her heart skipping a beat as it always did when he was around. She watched as he set down his glass and walked over to her, taking her hand in his.
“May I have this dance?”
“Anytime,” she laughed.
Dana watched from the sidelines. So many lives had changed over the last few months, hers included. She loved Fire Mountain and looked forward to riding the new Harley she’d purchased a week ago over all the winding roads. Her eyes scanned the crowd, not seeing Mitch this time, then shifting her gaze as he came into sight on the dance floor, holding the dark-haired woman in a tight embrace, swaying to the music. She caught his eye, raised her glass in salute, then turned to leave.
Mitch held his partner, half listening to what she said as his gaze wandered to Dana. She stood next to Amber, leaned up and gave her a kiss on the cheek, then set her drink down and walked away. A moment later he spotted her heading toward the parking area. He didn’t know why, but he wished she was the one on the dance floor with him instead of the woman in his arms.
He shook his head at the foolish thought. They were oil and water. Nothing about her appealed to him from her red hair and freckles to her pushy personality. Besides, he’d be leaving for Montana in a few weeks after completing his training at company headquarters. They’d see each other rarely, which was fine with him.
The dance ended and he turned his attention toward the sound of a motorcycle starting up. He spotted the big, copper and black Harley right off, admiring its lines. Then his eyes moved up to the rider and the can of beer he’d picked up slipped from his grip. Skirt pulled up to her thighs, bright copper and black helmet on her head, and red strands of hair peeking out from underneath. His breath caught and his mouth went dry at the sight.
As the dust from her cycle settled and she disappeared down the drive, Mitch knew the time had come to leave Fire Mountain and a certain redhead far behind.
