“What’s the dress for?” Mrs. Kepler asked. “It’s going to be rather fancy isn’t it?”
“A girl has to find a husband at some point, Mrs. Kepler,” Kate said. “I plan to wear it to my church’s summer ball. I thought I should give myself plenty of time to make it.”
She nodded beaming behind her tortoiseshell spectacles. Her long nails clicked on the tabletop where Kate was measuring out the fabric.
“And how are you paying for this?” she asked.
“Well, I brought back some usable fabric as you know which gave me some credit and then I thought we could take the rest out of next week’s pay,” Kate said.
Mrs. Kepler snorted eyeing her. “Is that so? Well, I suppose we can work that out.”
Kate smiled and at the end of her shift took the fabric home and wrapping it in brown paper, she packed it in her suitcase. This left very little space for her clothes. Oh well. Would she need a large thick coat in Arizona? She didn’t think so. She left it out and suddenly had much more space.
The days were counting down and soon it was time to finish up.
All that remained was how to give Ellie and Trudy the pamphlet. Should she take the chance and hand it to them explaining how it had helped her? No. It was risky. She decided to pen them a note and slip the pamphlet and the note under their door as she left. That way Ellie and Trudy would find it and they could make up their own minds about what to do from there.
She hoped and prayed they would follow her lead and find good men to take them out of the mess their father was putting them in.
