Veronica stepped back and Jamie squeezed her hand.

Colin dabbed at his eye and then mopped his face with his handkerchief. ‘I think he would have liked that, Veronica. Thank you.’

‘Maybe not as flamboyant a production as Topov might have wished but, under the circumstances, I think it serves the occasion,’ said Veronica.

‘Maybe he’d prefer we raise a glass to him,’ said Andy.

‘Follow me,’ said Reg. ‘There’s a small feast waiting.’

As they headed to the vehicles, Colin asked Andy, ‘So what did the coroner’s report have to say?’

‘Cause of death unknown. Could have been his heart. Who’s to say?’ said Andy.

‘True. He ate too much, drank too much,’ said Colin. ‘But I think he lived life to the full.’

Jamie kissed Veronica. ‘I’m sure Topov is happy now. You know why we were late?’

‘Reg said he had to change a tyre?’

‘Yes. Which meant taking out the casket to get to the jack. He fixed the tyre and drove off. And left Topov behind. Fortunately he realised when they were only a couple of clicks down the track!’

‘Oh, no!’ Veronica burst out laughing. ‘What a typical Topov story! Jamie, I’ve just had a thought. You know Marta offered to make some sort of donation, so why don’t we have a perpetual award set up at Indigitel – the Topov Trophy for best student film?’

Jamie hugged her. ‘What a glorious idea.’ He took her hand. ‘It would be nice to be able to fulfill someone’s dreams.’

‘Now, that is what Topov would call a good ending,’ said Veronica.
