Rye Ironstone: Mother Tesla's Death Ray Page 12

by John Wilkerson

My busted foot caused me to limp. I did everything I could to look unscathed. I don’t think it worked. In truth, I knew I looked like road kill cooked too long on the grill.

Gael passed a disapproving glance my way and shook her head. I smiled at my partner. She was skipping down the gravel road and humming her cheerful tune.

  “Enjoying yourself?” I asked.

She paused between notes. “Yes, sir. Loads was fun.”

  You’re one crazy lady.”

“I’ll let you live for now,” Gael said.

I held the old gal’s gaze, and in my best tough guy voice said, “Just remember I’m the hero of this story.”

She poked her finger at me. “You’re my sidekick, kiddo. Never forget that.”
