Shawna gave him a skeptical side eye as she turned the doorknob. Her eyes went wide as she saw a bed, a small cradle and a decent sized living area waiting for her.
“Well? What do you think?” he asked.
“It’s… wonderful!” she gasped.
She couldn’t believe her eyes. She had a home. It wasn’t a very big home, but the roof didn’t leak, there were no threats of a feral or slaver invasion, there was a bed, and even blankets.
“I can’t believe it, you… got this for us?” she asked.
“Yes, I earned this by getting the wind turbines up and running. As the baby gets bigger we can get a larger dwelling,” he explained. “For now, this will do.”
“We still haven’t named her,” Shawna said as she looked at the child that was sleeping at her breast.
“Martje?” Winston asked. “How do you like that name? It’s common enough in the tiger anima world that nobody will question it, but it’ll have meaning to us.”
Shawna smiled. “I like it.” She sat down on the bed and stroked her daughter’s forehead. “Her name will be Martje.”
Winston felt complete. “I’ve made good on my promise to you,” he said as he took Shawna’s hand. “I swore I would protect you and find you a safe place to live and raise our child. I swore you would never go into a brothel. I hope you trust me now,” he said with emotion shining in his amber eyes.
“I do,” Shawna said as she kissed him on the lips. “As hard as this all was, I’m glad we found each other again. I might not remember our childhood, but what’s important now is the future that we have together.”
Winston smiled and touched his baby girl on her black fuzzy head. “Welcome to the world, Martje. It might not be much right now, but we’re trying.”
The baby just put her fist in her mouth and cooed as she slept in her parents loving arms, content in the feeling of safety that surrounded her.
