“Hey, what can I say… Just needed to get the pipes cleaned?” Alexandra offered.
“Wait… so was he good? What happened? Wait, no, was he good? Rashonda’s been dying to know. So have I.”
Alexandra felt herself blush in spite of everything. “Yes. He was amazing. He was easily the best.”
Lynn made her summarize everything that had happened during the whole week, except of course, the private parts. Those she made Alexandra reveal in graphic detail before she would agree to help.
“Hmmm,” Lynn said, looking as if she were dreaming. “Too bad. Hey, does he have a brother or anything? Oh wait, never mind. Ok, so what do we do?”
Alexandra wanted to kill her. I’ve never committed murder, but if I ever started to.
“Do you have his number? It must be on file. Address, anything? I need to get in contact about… work.” Alexandra stopped herself.
Lynn hummed softly in thought, “I don’t know.” She tapped a few keys and shook her head. “Nope, not seeing him on the data base, which is odd.” She frowned, softly. “Come to think about it, I haven’t really heard the heads of the firm talk about him much… at all, really.”
Alexandra felt disappointment move through her, followed quickly by surprise.
“Really?”
She hadn’t expected that. After all, he was wealthy and well known to the firm. Surely, they would still mention his name occasionally.
“Yeah, it’s like they’ve forgotten about him or something.” Lynn laughed, before her eyes softened in thought. “I have seen a couple of other guys around, who kind of have his accent, you know the one…”
Alexandra nodded. She did. She couldn’t get that accent out of her mind, couldn’t get his voice out of her head, to move from her senses. She had tried. Oh, believe her, she had tried, but nothing worked.
Still, Alexandra found it strange that Connor had just disappeared like that. Obviously, he hadn’t just disappeared from her life, but from everyone else that she knew. It was strange. On the way home, Alexandra mulled over this, and it wasn’t until she had locked her apparent door, that she started to think of another way to reach him.
It was a long shot, but it was really the only idea that Alexandra had. She headed over to her Toshiba and fired it up. It took her a moment to bring up the webpages, but once she had, she wasted no time browsing through the internet, searching for him, searching for any mention of him.
What she found was even more unsettling than she could have imagined. She found nothing. Nothing at all. Not even a whisper of his name. He didn’t have any news about him. Not an article about him, his family, or anything. Alexandra couldn’t believe that a man who was that wealthy, could have no stories written about him. In fact, from the looks of it, he didn’t even have a social media account. She checked all of the sites, skimming through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram… nothing, not even a hint or a whisper, and certainly not a single picture.
She would know Connor anywhere, after all. With those striking eyes and that blonde hair, he stood out from a crowd. And yet… yet, she couldn’t find even a whisper of his name. Confused and stumped, Alexandra leaned back in her chair, slowly shutting down her computer.
She sat in her apartment as the news sank in, as the sun slowly set over the city and the reality hit her like a ton of bricks.
She wasn’t going to find Connor. He had disappeared. He had disappeared completely and Alexandra had no way to reach him, no way to contact him and no way to get in touch. He was gone.
And Alexandra… well, Alexandra was pregnant with his baby. A knot formed in Alexandra’s throat and she felt the ache in her chest. She took a deep breath, and glanced down. She wasn’t showing yet, and it made it all the harder to process. But she knew it to be true. She was pregnant and she was about to become a mother.
Not just a mother, she realized. She was about to become a single mother.
Alexandra felt a surge of emotions inside of her. She felt happiness and joy overwhelm her in an instant, happiness about motherhood, happiness about finally becoming a mother and having the baby that she thought she could never have.
But hot on the heels of happiness, was dread. Dread for having to face this alone, dread for having to explain to this child why there was no father around, why their father had not stayed. It was frightening, it was exhilarating. Alexandra had never felt so excited, so elated, so overwhelmingly happy, so scared and so conflicted in her life.
She was going to be a mother. She was going to have a baby.
Alexandra buried her head in her hands and cried.
Chapter 19: Past Time to Infinity
Alexandra tossed and turned in her sleep, feeling the tendrils of another dream wrap themselves around her. She felt the touch of Connor, felt the touch of his hands on her skin, but he wasn’t quite the Connor she knew. He wasn’t quite human. And yet, it didn’t matter. Alexandra could feel the warmth and love radiating from him all the same, feel the passion and love that she had come to associate with Connor. She felt the pressure rising up inside of her, rising and rising, until…
Alexandra was jolted awake by the sound of her phone ringing beside her bed.
Alexandra blinked, her eyes bleary from sleep. She fumbled for her phone, wondering who could be calling her at this time of night. She managed to grab it and glanced at the screen. It was a private number. If Alexandra had been more awake, she probably wouldn’t have touched it. She probably would have ignored the number, or blocked it.
But right now, she was exhausted. Mentally, emotionally, and physically. She had been living a roller-coaster of a life, and she was too tired to think it through. Why the fuck not? She grabbed the phone and answered, sleepily holding it to her ear, “Hello?”
“Alexandra, it’s me!” The voice that came through the phone was like a voice from a dream. Alexandra would know that voice anywhere, would know that voice across time and space itself.
Connor! Alexandra felt herself wake up in a second, jolted from the sleepy groggy exhaustion. She no longer felt tired, she felt incredibly awake.
“Connor?” Alexandra’s voice came out in a rough gasp.
“Yes!” He sounded relieved and Alexandra felt affection flood her, even though she knew that she should still be angry at him. It felt like a dream and Alexandra prayed that she wouldn’t wake up. She could feel his happiness as well, coursing through her.
“Alexandra, I’m so sorry that I left.” It all came out in a sudden rush, and Alexandra could hear that Connor’s voice was heavy with emotion, “My time here is short. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you where I went, but I…” He trailed off and she could hear something like panic in his voice, a desperate sort of urgency.
“Please, Alexandra, I need to see you again. I’m outside and I... I just need to see you again.”
He wanted to see her. He hadn’t abandoned her completely. Alexandra felt happiness rise up inside of her. She didn’t know if she was absolutely elated, or so, so terribly angry at him for just leaving like he did.
She wanted to tell him off, she wanted to pull him close, and she wanted to tell him the good news! A million thoughts were racing around her head, a million ideas, potential things that she could say, that she could do.
Alexandra moved, as if in slow motion, towards the front door, feeling her hands shake. She could see him. She could see a figure outside of her door, and she knew, she knew immediately and without a shadow of a doubt that that was Connor. He was here, just like he said he was!
Alexandra felt her heart ache, threatening to explode with the weight of the emotion coursing through her body. She dropped her phone and it fell to the carpet. With trembling hands, she pulled open her front door, the lock giving way easily.
And as she opened the door, prepared to tell Connor everything that was on her mind, prepared to let him know exactly what he had done… she just couldn’t.
Because he was here! He was here, outside, looking at
her with those blue eyes and he reached his arms out…
And Alexandra fell into them. Her lips were pressed against his and Alexandra couldn’t do anything but kiss him. He gathered her into his arms, pulling her close against his chest. She felt the strength of his arms and the way he held her. She melded into him like they had never been apart, like she had never had to live, and go through all of this, without him.
He was here. He was here, in her arms, kissing her, tasting like heaven and feeling even better. He was back, and there was no way that Alexandra was going to let go ever again. Not this time.
She pulled Connor in closer, felt his hands move up her body, slide across the fabric of her nightdress, making her shiver. They stumbled through the door, Connor pushing it shut as they went. He pushed her up against the wall and Alexandra found herself melting into him.
“I’ve missed you,” he whispered, a breath against her neck. He kissed her neck, sucking the skin and sending tingles all through Alexandra, leaving her breathless. She bit her lip and felt the dizzying pleasure rise up inside of her.
She had missed him too, more than she had words to say, more than she knew how to express, or dared to express. Instead, she grabbed him tight and pulled at his shirt, sliding it over his head. He obliged and Alexandra ran her hands over every angle of his body, every curve of his form, the body and the man that she had dreamt of since he left.
They barely managed to make it to the bedroom, before Connor was on top of her, kissing her hard and leaving Alexandra feeling breathless and winded. This was everything that she had dreamt and more. His hands didn’t lie, the urgency in his touch, the trembling of his body against hers.
He had missed her every bit as much as she had missed him. She was overwhelmed with emotion, everything slamming into her yet again, slamming against her chest until she couldn’t think past the sensations in her body and the burning thought in her mind.
She needed to tell him. She needed to tell him before life found a way to tear him apart. The news that seemed like both a blessing and a curse, now seemed like nothing but a blessing. Because he did care. He did care and this baby would be loved and known by the father, in some way. In some way.
Alexandra’s heart seized in her chest and she gasped, “Connor… Connor, I need to tell you something.”
Her hands found his face, cradling in in her grasp, her fingertips brushing against his skin. His eyes, hazy with arousal, focused on hers and he looked at her honestly. He stilled, although he was still panting a little, a flush to his cheeks.
“Yes?” He whispered, voice soft through the dark night around them. Alexandra struggled to find the words, but she couldn’t wait any longer. She blurted it out, tears springing to her eyes.
“Connor, I’m pregnant,” she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion, “And the baby’s yours. There’s no one else that it could be…”
Alexandra felt the tears spill from her eyes. Emotions were welling up inside her, a type of happiness that she hadn’t believed to be possible until now. It was beautiful. Connor’s eyes widened, the beautiful blue sparkling in the light. “You… you’re sure?”
He whispered, his voice hushed and awed, as if he didn’t quite know if he should believe it. Alexandra didn’t blame him. She didn’t think she was able to have children until now.
“Yes…” She whispered, “Yes, I’m sure.” I would know.
Connor pulled her in, in a sudden, passionate rush. Alexandra gasped and held him tight. He buried into her shoulder and whispered, “I love you, Alexandra.” His voice caught, “I love you.”
Then his lips were on hers and Alexandra could see the tears sparkling across his eyelashes, see a barely restrained elation in his eyes and she felt as if her heart might explode.
He didn’t see this baby as a mistake. He didn’t push her away and argue. He just held her and whispered those sweet words. He touched her with such gentility, breath brushing against her skin.
It was perfect. It was everything that Alexandra could have hoped for, and more. She felt the emotion well up inside of her, the barely restrained happiness that shivered down her spine and brought tears to her eyes. Perfect. It was perfect and Alexandra couldn’t ask for more.
Connor pushed her gently onto the bed, his touch gentle as he pulled away her nightdress, letting it slide off. His clothes followed suit soon afterwards, falling to a heap on the floor, until there was nothing between them, nothing that could separate them. Alexandra could feel Connor’s skin against her own, feel his heartbeat and the rise and fall of his breathing.
“Connor…” She moaned softly, his name rolling on her tongue as she arched her body into his. His fingers were sliding between her legs, brushing the heat that lay there. Then he was pushing inside of her, moving his hips so that they slid together as one.
His hands found her breasts, caressing them tenderly, squeezing softly, his thumb brushing her nipples and sending pleasure shuddering through her.
Every tingle of pleasure was doubled, every sensation, shared. Where there bodies were separate, there emotions were one. The sensation of feeling his innermost self was a thousand times stronger now that he was there. It was overwhelming, blurring out even the physical details of their intimacy into a blurred image of the oneness that they shared together. This was not sex, but lovemaking that took them out of body and merged their souls, an act that seemed to bond their essences into a singular self. A shared self.
Every thrust, every kiss, every gentle caress seemed to carve itself into the flesh of time, and imprint itself onto eternity.
She rocked her hips against his, arching into the pleasure, biting her lip at the sensations that were moving through her. It was incredible. It was breathtaking and mind-blowing.
But more than that. It was the connection, the current that hummed between them and connected them. It was the way Connor’s eyes shone when he looked at her, the breathless shudder that he caused in Alexandra, the perfection in his touch and the way he held her.
He loved her. He loved her and she loved him. Alexandra felt the climax rising up inside her, thundering through her in a blissful wash of pleasure and emotion. It was too much to handle, it was overwhelming, and it was perfect.
Connor climaxed soon after, holding her just as tightly as they basked in the pleasure that rolled through them both and left them both exhausted and weak at the knees.
Because everything was going to be okay now. Alexandra just knew it. She held onto Connor, and found the peace and contentment that she craved.
He was here. Everything was perfect again.
Why is it so intense this time? It’s as if I can feel his emotions coursing through me, as well as my own?
Chapter 20: Forgive me, I have Cursed You with Long Life
Alexandra looked up at Connor. His expression was a little bit thoughtful. Not quite distant, but like he was thinking deeply about things. Alexandra supposed that she couldn’t blame him. He had just found out that he was about to be a father. Alexandra supposed that that must be a huge thing to contemplate. Alexandra knew that she had had enough trouble wrapping her head around things, as it was.
Connor glanced down at her and smiled, gently stroking her hair. “I don’t know… what to say, Alexandra…” He swallowed softly and shook his head. “Sorry if I seem distant I just… I had no idea that I could have children…” He murmured, clearly awestruck by the whole thing.
Alexandra nodded, understanding swirling in her mind. “Me, neither,” she whispered, “The day I met you I had just been told that I would never be able to have a child.” She took a deep breath. “But the doctor says that the tests are absolutely positive.”
Connor nodded slowly and she could see a sparkle in his eyes. He leaned in and kissed her, before whispering, “If that’s the case, I suppose I had better tell you everything.” He moved, pulling the blankets away and Alexandra hurried to sit up beside him.
“There’s a lot to tell you and I don’t think
you’ll believe half of it… but hear me out.”
Alexandra nodded, feeling a stirring of concern. “Okay, I’ll try.”
Connor took a deep breath and seemed to be contemplating this, contemplating how to tell her. Then he spoke, simply and in a voice that trembled ever so slightly, “Alexandra… I’m not human. I’m a dragon shifter.”
Alexandra wasn’t sure that she had heard that correctly. Not human. A dragon? She felt her head spin and leaned against the headboard for support. She felt sick. She didn’t know what to believe or what to feel. The heat rushed through her and she found herself shaking her head again, unable to believe it.
“I’m not from your realm. I came through a portal.” He took a deep breath and ran his hands through his hair. “I snuck into the human world the first time. I was given seven days to be here, before I was ordered to return, under threat of great punishment.” Connor shifted. “Telling you, would have resulted in your punishment and death, also, but I couldn’t risk it…”
Connor seemed to sense that she was about to speak, because he pressed on, in a rush.
“I’m betrothed to an awful dragon, a woman who hates me and the feeling is mutual. She has been using her power and that of her father’s to try and force me into a marriage. But I couldn’t do it.” He turned his eyes towards Alexandra. “I couldn’t just forget you and marry her. I managed to escape and sneak away… I just had to see you again.”
Alexandra shook her head, feeling panic bubble up inside of her. What was he saying? He couldn’t honestly believe that, could he? Either he was insane, or he was mocking her.
“What do you mean? A dragon?!” Her voice was trembling, “A dragon? How can you be a dragon?” Alexandra felt giddy. “Take this seriously, Connor!”
“I am!” Connor pushed himself up, out of the bed. “I’ll prove it.”
“Prove it?!” Alexandra felt her voice crack, tears threatening her, “How can you prove something like that? That’s insane!”
