Dangerous Obsessions Page 4

“It’s not what I want.” His spine was straight, his fists clenched. “With you, Catriona…it’s all or nothing. I can’t have you in my arms and wonder if you want to be there.” He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, and then smiled. The lazy, heavy-lidded look was back—or at least a shadow of it. “So this is what I want from you: if you want me, you’ll come to me.” He slid a card across the desk to me. “Call, and the car will come for you.”

“Tonight?” I couldn’t think what else to say.

“Take as much time as you need.” His eyes burned into mine, and he stood again to come to me. His mouth hovered close. “I want you to come to me, Catriona. I want you to tell me that you’re mine.” He tilted his head to breathe the words in my ear. “And you will, you know.”

“I will?” My voice didn’t seem to work properly.

“You will. You’re made for me.”

“Then why…” I tried to clear my head. “Why make me say it?”

“Because until you can, until you do…you won’t be ready to be mine.” He drew back and gestured to the door. “Go on. Think about it.” His half-smile made my knees go weak. “I’ll be waiting.”

I stepped out into the lobby and left with only the barest nod at his secretary. She glowered; she wasn’t a big fan of me. I supposed she’d be even less of a fan when she realized why I’d come to Ellison Corp in the first place. In the elevator, I slumped back against the wall and closed my eyes. I knew what the smart thing to do was.

Get close to Dominick Ellison, and find out all of his secrets.

  - Dominick -

It was past midnight when she arrived, a tiny shape outside my door. Edward had called to say he was bringing her over, and I had spent the ensuing fifteen minutes pacing around my apartment. I told myself I’d had no doubts, and in a way it was true. But I understood, better than anyone else, why she would want to run from this. It was terrifying.

When I opened the door, I let my gaze travel over her. She was wearing a nicer coat, but it was still too much clothing—that was, if she was here for the reason I hoped. I waited, my hand on the doorframe, and she looked me dead in the eyes: scared, but resolute.

“Well?” I said finally. I knew she cold heard the hunger in my voice.

“I’m yours,” she said softly. Tears trembled in her eyes. “I’m yours.”

“Yes.” It was a breath; almost, I might say, a prayer. I stepped back to allow her over the threshold.

“I…” She looked around herself. What do I do next? She was beautiful, unsure of herself and still exquisite.

“Go to the bedroom,” I said. I could not keep the desire from my voice. “I’ll be there in a moment.” I gestured to the hallway on the other side of the room and she went. She did not look back, but from the self-conscious set of her shoulders, she knew I was watching her, and I smiled to see her go.

It was as I turned back to close the door that my eye caught a hint of movement in the hallway. My head whipped around, eyes narrowing as the figure stepped out of the shadows. Blue eyes, hair gone grey at the temples. And that same, familiar smile.

  “Hello, Dominick.”

“Sebastian.” I lifted one eyebrow. “What a surprise.”
