Briac looked at her in shock as she walked in the bathroom closing the door behind her and he headed downstairs where he told Natalee, “I think I just got a threat from Abella.”
“You did?” Natalee asked staring at him. “What did she threaten you for?”
“She told me if I hurt you although she liked me, she would make sure that I suffer horribly,” Briac repeated Abella’s words.
“Wow,” Natalee said softly as tears came to her eyes, and Briac put an arm around her pulling her to his chest.
“She isn’t the only one from what Gregory told me, Asilynn made the same threat a few days ago,” Briac told her in her ear. “So see you are definitely someone that people like and want to be friends with.”
Natalee nodded her head resting against him before he chuckled and gave her a squeeze. “Although I am enjoying this, let’s get going so I can stop off at the pack house before we head out.”
They left the house a few minutes later and fifteen minutes after that, Abella walked out of the bathroom a towel wrapped around her body eyes alert listening to the silence of the house before she walked over to her room and with a slight hand motion, the front door locked as she stepped inside her room.
She dressed quickly putting her up in a loose ponytail before she slipped on a pair of flats and the grabbing the laptop case and her notebooks, she exited the room. Her new companion followed her without hesitation as she put her things down in the living room before striding to the hallway where she hesitated for a brief second. She closed her eyes and lifted one hand pressing it flat against the wall, and with a chant, a door suddenly appeared.
She reached for the handle and opened the door making a comment over her shoulder, “I guess you can come in.”
The wolf growled but his steps were hesitant as he followed her in the room giving a wolf snort as the room allowed him inside.
“Interesting, huh,” Abella said without turning around although she could feel the wolf’s eyes glaring at her.
She walked to the middle of the room and closing her eyes she raised her hands as the candles around the room lit up. She lowered her hands before she sunk a little clumsily to the floor sitting Indian-style allowing her body to relax. The wolf laid in front of the doorway as she sat there his silver eyes focused completely on her.
Almost two hours went by with Abella not moving a muscle, and the wolf yawned stretching his back then front legs out before settling back in position in front of the door.
Suddenly Abella shifted and her eyes opened scanning the room before she slowly unfolded her legs standing up gently as her legs protested from sitting so long.
“I hope that she is okay because I can’t seem to find her at all,” she muttered shaking her head as she leaned forward gently rubbing her legs to create circulation in her numb limbs.
After moving around some, she checked her watch and with a soft sigh, she headed out of the room closing the door behind her walking away as the door disappeared in to the framework.
“See you tonight, buddy,” she said grabbing the things from the couch and patting his head before she unlocked the door and walked out of the house.
The wolf tilted his head until he heard the car pull away from the house and the next instant, Jed stood where the wolf had stood not a few seconds before.
“You are just too observant, Abella,” he uttered a thoughtful look on his face before he disappeared from the room.
He reappeared back in the house hours later when the sun had already gone down and after shifting back to his wolf he went through the house finally finding Abella in her secret room practicing.
“You’re back,” she commented throwing a smile over at the animal as he resumed his earlier position in front of the door. She continued doing what she was doing looking down occasionally at a notebook she had opened at her feet.
Finally, she stopped sinking to her knees as she took a deep breath before resting her hands on her upper thighs, she regulated her breathing and began to chant low under her breath, but before she could achieve what she wanted to do her companion knocked her backwards.
“Hey,” Abella said in stunned surprise, but she stopped when she saw the narrowed eyes of the wolf standing over her and he growled in her face. “I take it you don’t want me to do that, huh?”
The wolf shook his huge head and walked off her, and as Abella shifted to a sitting position she glanced over at him with suspicious eyes though she didn’t comment.
“It’s time for me to start studying anyway,” she said getting to her feet before walking around the room putting out the candles.
The wolf left the room first with Abella closely behind him shutting the door firmly before she started upstairs only to stop as her companion grabbed her wrist between his teeth and pulled her to the kitchen.
“I guess you’re telling me to eat something,” Abella remarked as the wolf let go once she was standing in front of the refrigerator.
She sighed but didn’t bother arguing with the animal as she opened the door as her stomach growled angrily at her. “I hear you,” she muttered as she pulled out the fixings to make a ham and cheese sandwich which after a moment hesitation she put back and grabbed some bacon instead with lettuce and tomato.
The wolf watched with stern eyes as she made herself something to eat glancing down at him as she cooked the bacon.
Not too much later, she was sitting at the table with a BLT and her book studying for the next day’s test while eating, and the wolf snapped at her but otherwise he laid down his head on his paws watching her.
She finished her sandwich and pushed the plate to the side as she continued studying the book glancing at the notebook at the same time.
A few hours later, the home phone rung pulling Abella out of her daze of studying as she got up to answer it.
“Hello,” she said absently leaning against the wall putting her head in her hand.
“Abella,” Janie muttered with broken breathes. “Be careful she won’t stop until she gets them all.”
“Janie,” Abella said straightening up her eyes narrowed. “Who are you talking about? Scratch that, where are you?”
“It’s too late for me,” Janie said in uneven breathes. “Cicely needs your help.”
Then the line went dead, and Abella hung up the phone fast as she rushed out of the room up the stairs to her bedroom where her phone sat on her bed.
She saw the missed call and checked it noticing that the call was from Janie but she didn’t leave a message. She tried calling her back but it went straight to voice mail so Abella tried calling Cicely although her phone only rang without any one answering.
“Damn,” Abella said immediately dropping to her knees ready to use her ability to find her when suddenly another voice said sharply.
“No, Abella.”
She turned around fast falling on her ass as she glanced up at a naked Jed who glared at her with steely eyes.
“But,” Abella said as she averted her eyes and grabbing the blanket she handed it to him so he could cover himself.
“Cicely can take care of herself,” he told her in a soft voice sitting down on the bed wrapped in the blanket. “Before you do something stupid, you need to find out what is going on.”
Abella looked at him with hard eyes before she said, “You know more than I do, don’t you, Uncle Jed?”
He sighed nodding his own head as he put a hand on her head as he said, “How are your classes going?”
Abella glared at him before she stared at the wall telling him honestly, “I don’t know what the hell is going on but every single one of my classes had me taking a test except for this evening, which you know about.”
Jed nodded his head before he told her, “You have two more tests left, right?”
After Abella nodded her head, Jed continued on. “After you take these last tests, then I will tell you what I have learned.”
Abella stared at him with stormy grey eyes that he met with steely
silver eyes and she scowled but nodded her head.
“All right,” Abella said in harsh voice. “But when I finish on the last day, I want to know everything, Uncle Jed.”
Chapter 48
The next few days Abella studied hard as her companion continued to be by her side in wolf form even though it was inconvenient for him. After the last class where she took her last test, she left the room with a determined stride unsure if she passed but not too worry about it as she went out to her car.
Arriving home, she went inside locking the door behind her before she called out, “Uncle Jed, I’m home.”
Her eyes narrowed as she put down her book bag slowly before she moved easily down the hallway until she made it to her secret room where she frowned before she opened the door.
“There you are,” the melodic voice called out as Abella entered the room.
Abella nodded her head letting her eyes scan the room quickly before she went back to the woman standing in the middle of her sanctuary.
“What can I do for you?” Abella asked stepping in the room.
The woman laughed as she turned fully to see her before she answered, “I just wanted to see you and tell you that Cicely says ‘hello’.”
Abella let her eyes narrow but she didn’t react any other way. “I hope she is enjoying herself.”
“Oh, she is and she would like for you to come visit,” the woman remarked giving her a smile that made goose bumps run down Abella’s back.
“I guess I can arrange that,” Abella mentioned giving her a small nod. “Just tell her to let me know where I can meet her and I will be there.”
The woman gave her a look before she scanned the room and commented, “You are merely a beginner, aren’t you?”
She sighed shaking her head before she said, “I will make sure to give Cicely your message and have her get in contact with you.”
She gave Abella another long manipulative look before she turned and disappeared from the room. Abella waited a few minutes before she moved quickly over to the table and started lighting candles as Jed said from the doorway, “What are you doing?”
Abella didn’t look behind her as she started positioning the candles around the room. “Grab the blue book for me, will you Uncle Jed.”
Jed looked at her narrowly but did as she requested and she told him as he picked it up, “Turn the pages until you get to almost halfway through the book and you can’t miss it.”
Jed did as she suggested and his eyes widened as he found the page before his eyes snapped up to her as Abella continued walking around the room positioning candles.
“I don’t know if it will work as I have never tried it, and my mother didn’t note whether it did or not but it won’t hurt to try it,” Abella told him.
“Be careful, Abella,” Jed warned.
Abella nodded her head as she positioned the last candle before she took a deep breath and after giving him a concerned glance, she stood in the middle of the room her eyes closed before she began to chant low under her breath her hands clasped out in front of her.
Jed stood still his eyes focused on her when suddenly his eyes saw a candle flare up and then another one until every single candle in the room was flared.
Witches of true, witches of friends, only allow witches I trust entrance.
She repeated the chant over and over as the candles flamed brighter until finally her eyes snapped open and then she pulled her hands to her chest as the flame on the candles literally froze before they died out.
Abella sunk to the floor her eyes weary as she said, “Let’s see if it works.”
Jed walked over and helped her up as he said, “You owe me an explanation for doing this.”
“As you owe me an explanation of what you’ve learned,” Abella countered tiredly.
Jed nodded his head as he walked them out of the room and closed the door behind them, and as Abella glanced back she stilled seeing a purple flame around the door.
“Do you see it, Uncle Jed?” She asked in a soft voice and he frowned turning his head to look at the wall behind them.
“See what?” He asked sensing the doorway but not being able to see anything else before he turned back to Abella who smiled briefly.
“Nothing,” Abella answered as she turned and headed for the living room as Jed followed her more slowly.
“I am getting too old for this do you know that,” he said once they had settled down in the kitchen with something cool to drink.
“So does that mean you will retire to the Evergreen Pack?” Abella asked giving him a suspicious look.
“Maybe,” Jed told her not answering the question in her eyes.
“What did you learn, Uncle Jed?” Abella asked quietly.
He sighed before he told her, “A few days after your attack a member that had gone with you was attacked and killed outside her home. Not too long after that another one was attacked and killed, and it has been repeating until the last one left is…you.”
“What was the purpose?” Abella asked her face pale and stomach churning slightly.
“It is believed that another witch is trying to harness any unique power that they can find,” Jed told her watching a slight frown come to her face.
“There were only a few of those women who went with us that had a unique power from what Aunt Cicely told me,” Abella said slowly.
Jed nodded his head before he added, “Cicely was one of them, Abella, as she has something similar to you.”
Abella’s eyes widened at that as she looked at him. “That’s why she could train me how to use it.”
Jed nodded his head before he admitted, “But even Cicely said that your ability was much stronger than hers.”
Abella looked at him in confusion before he explained, “Abella, even with her power, Cicely can’t see people she never met and be able to pinpoint exactly where they are at, or what they are doing.”
Abella nodded her head in understanding until she remembered their training from her first day with Cicely. “You mean…” Abella began.
“Those individuals that Cicely gave you were people she knew, but you didn’t,” Jed told her. “And yet you were accurate in almost every description that you gave her about where they were.”
“She was testing me,” Abella mumbled.
“You knew that, but she was trying to see how far you can go,” Jed told her hesitating slightly.
Abella looked at him and asked, “What is it, Uncle Jed?”
Jed said quietly, “Did Cicely explain to you what could happen if you use your gift and are interrupted by anything?”
“Huh,” Abella said not understanding his question at all.
Jed sighed before he began to explain his eyes filled with worry as Abella listened her eyes becoming blank not telling Jed anything of what she was thinking.
Jed looked down at her a few hours later as she lay on the living room couch curled up on her side and he sighed as his cell phone rung.
“Hello,” he said silver eyes staring down at her. “She is doing fine although a little tired after studying almost nonstop for the past week.”
He listened a little longer before he spoke a few more words and then hung up the phone.
“What can I do to help you?” He asked putting a hand on her head before suddenly he froze as his wolf-side howled within him.
He didn’t make a sound as he stepped back and fell in the chair his silver eyes bright but dimmed with worry as he continued watching her for the rest of the night.
Abella woke up slowly her eyes scanning the room before they landed on Jed slumped in the chair and she sat up slowly her stomach churning before it settled.
“So what do you plan on doing?” Jed asked quietly and Abella’s head snapped over to him.
“I thought you were sleeping,” she said getting a brief smile from his weathered face as he sat forward.
“She said Cicely wants to see me so I guess I will go and see her,” Abella said getting up a
nd stretching as she almost lost her balance, and Jed frowned at the action.
“How do we do that?” Jed asked sarcastically only to get a smirk from Abella
“I want to take a shower and do you think that we can get in Aunt Cicely’s sanctuary?” Abella asked as she turned heading for the stairs.
“I think we can,” Jed said with his own smug laugh.
Abella chuckled as she started upstairs and she heard Jed say, “I will fix breakfast.”
She nodded her head although she knew that he couldn’t see her as she headed straight for the bathroom and taking a faster than normal shower before going to her room still fully wet. She dried herself quickly before grabbing a pair of black jeans, a black tank top with a black pullover, and black sneakers for her feet. With a simple twist, she pulled her hair back to a tight bun at the base of her skull making sure to keep it secured so no flying pieces would get in her face.
She was back down stairs within thirty minutes and Jed looked up noting the all black gear as she settled down at the table, and he watched a light grimace crossed her face before she reached for the bacon.
“So you are going to use Cicely sanctuary to find her?” Jed asked.
“No,” Abella said honestly. “That is where they want me to go so they can take me, or at least, that’s what I think anyway.”
Jed thought over what she said as they ate the breakfast he made and he noticed she ate most of the bacon and drank the juice, but she barely touched the eggs and coffee he had placed in front of her.
After eating and washing what few dishes they had used, she grabbed a jacket as Jed said, “Ready to go?”
“Are you ready to step in a trap?” Abella commented as they walked out of the house.
Jed laughed as Abella locked the door behind her and said, “I guess we shall see.”
Abella shook her head as they walked over to her car and climbed inside pulling away from the house without any hesitation.
At the library, the woman gave them an odd look as they walked in heading for the sections of old books that Cicely preferred and Jed said the chant that brought forth the door, and as he opened it Abella asked, “What happens to the sanctuary if something should happen to the witch?”
