Consider Bliss’s reflecting on Temple recruiters and if they told the truth in their ads about the requirements needed for Temple girls. Does it sound like a trade one should encourage? Does it sound like something a woman or girl would ever want to apply for?
During the second interaction with Bliss, Force records the event and sends the feeds to Drake. In our time, this is defined as child pornography, though the legal age has been lowered in Bliss’s time. Research the facts about and the deeds done in pornography. National Center on Sexual Exploitation and Fight the New Drug are good starts.
During this interaction: Bliss smiles. Even as Serenity whips her, Bliss smiles. Does this happen in pornography? Discuss what might be happening behind the screen and how what’s on screen is a manipulation. However one “acts”, does it change what is being done and make it acceptable? How are children affected by the portrayal of pornography?
Bliss says she doesn’t want to be rescued and can’t be saved. Research the mindset of those in sex-trafficking. In light of this, discuss the negatives of “rescue” work and “hero” mindsets and how these are not helpful and can be damaging to those in sex-trafficking. (Disclaimer: this discussion relates to adult women and not children)
Luc ponders his father’s words and how they influenced him. And how the world told him the same. Discuss how young boys can be shaped by the messages around them. What sort of messages does the culture send to boys? What about other environments? Are there similarities?
65-95% of those in prostitution were sexually assaulted as children. This is true for Bliss. In light of this combined with deception, is Bliss’s mindset more understandable, including her desire to live and die in the Temple? What can it teach us about reaching women in those environments? i.e choosing to see the little girl inside?
