  Chapter One

Devyn was in love with Keran Underwood. A fact she wouldn’t even try to deny if she was asked. But she faced two major challenges: one, Keran was a werewolf and two, he blamed her for his son’s kidnapping. How could she overcome such major obstacles that stood in her way?

While she stuck to one corner of the couch where he dumped her after she fainted in the garden, Devyn stared at him. His nostrils flared. His teeth bared. Devyn didn’t blame him for is anger. Ever though Justin wasn’t her son, she was still mad at the people who dared to take him away. What pained her was that Keran believed she was in cahoots with those kidnappers.

How could he believe she was capable of such a crime?

When he made love to her the night before, she’d assumed they would stick together from that moment onwards. She envisioned a happy life for them once Justin was brought back. But here she was, spinning castles in the clouds while Keran’s men were ruthlessly investigating her. They found something which they believed linked her to the crime. Nothing could be more absurd than the accusation that she meant to harm Justin. In the short time that she spent with them, she managed to fall in love with both father and son—and if Keran didn’t believe her, then he wasn’t the man she thought he was.

“Where’s my son?” he demanded again.

Devyn chose to ignore him. She was getting tired of the same nonsense. If he didn’t have anything original to say then it was best she kept her mouth shut.

  “Where is he?”

“Sir, may I try?” Martin interjected, the man responsible for Keran and his son’s security.

Keran waved a hand and walked over to the window. The muscles of his shoulders were tense and he looked like he was ready to do some serious damage to someone. And right now, it looked as if that person might be her.

She wasn’t scared. If he thought he could frighten her with his shape-shifting shenanigans, then he would be wrong. Once she was over the initial shock of it, Devyn calmed down pretty quickly.

He would soon realize he was barking up the wrong tree.

“Ma’am, we have evidence that you booked your flight for today. You planned to leave.”

Although she didn’t want to give them the satisfaction of a reply, Devyn was aware that time was passing at a furious rate. The sooner they looked away from her and started searching for the real culprits, the quicker they would find Justin. And she wanted that to happen more than anything else. The boy was only eight, and he didn’t deserve this kind of misery. “I did,” she admitted. “But I booked the tickets on the day Keran left. I wanted to leave when he came home because…well, I didn’t want to work with him anymore.”

“But you didn’t tell him that when he came back?”

“He’d lost his son. I was stupid enough to believe he might need my support.”

Martin scratched his head. “When you and Justin walked into the backstage area, you said you didn’t see anyone. How is that possible? That place should have been teeming with people. After all, the concert was over and people would have poured in to congratulate or to see the members of the band.”

“I’ve no idea about that,” Devyn replied. “Maybe those guys managed to take us in an area where there were no people. I don’t know. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I’m not to blame for Justin’s kidnapping. If I were the one responsible, why would I have stayed behind? I would have gone with them, so that I could be safe. Only an idiot would have come back.”

“Or someone who was motivated to find out what I planned to do once I found out that my son as kidnapped,” Keran snapped back. “You probably gave them all the information we’ve been collecting.”

His words hurt her like a barb struck straight in the heart. Still, Devyn managed to keep her expression neutral. If he was bent on being stupid, there wasn’t much she could do about it. “I did no such thing. You can check everything. Look a
t my phone records. See if I made any calls. There are cameras all over the place. You can easily find out if I got any chance to be alone to do something that might jeopardize this investigation.”

“There are no cameras in your room,” he barked.

  She gazed at him.

His eyes were cold. There wasn’t an ounce of emotion in them.

Where was the man she thought she loved? He wasn’t who he said he was, and that changed everything. Devyn was only interested in finding out about Justin. As soon as the boy came home, she intended to leave and never see Keran again. “Whatever. You can do whatever the hell you want to see if I was connected to this crime.”

“A confession would be most helpful,” he sneered.

Devyn grabbed a deep, calming breath, and then expelled it slowly. “At the risk of repeating myself, I’ve got to say that you’re wrong about me. Don’t get so hung up on the certainty that I’m the mastermind behind this kidnapping that you fail to catch the one who’s actually responsible for taking your son away from you.”

“We know now who they are. The Wolverine has him.”

She didn’t know who he was talking about. Devyn glanced at Martin. He was trying to read her expressions to see if she knew what Keran was talking about. “Who are they?”

  “You know who they are.”

She rolled her eyes. “No, I don’t. I’m assuming from your expression that they’re a bunch of werewolves.”

“You’ve never heard of them before?” Martin asked.

“I didn’t even know that Keran was one. Are you one too?”

Martin hesitated. He nodded. “Yes, I am. Look. We need to know if you have ever had contact with any other shape shifters before. This is very important. Justin is with them, and his life is in danger.”

“I would do anything for him. Anything at all.” She ignored Keran’s snort. “But I don’t know anything. Trust me. If you don’t, I’m afraid you’re wasting precious time and putting Justin in danger. He deserves for you to give your best and by focusing on me, you’re failing miserably.”

Martin leaned back. He studied her as if she was an oddity, a specimen he wanted to examine under a microscope. She wasn’t scared of him. Sure, maybe he could shape-shift and hurt her. He might even be able to kill her, but she hadn’t done anything wrong and she clung onto that knowledge because it was the only thing that would save her.

Keran banged his hand hard on the window. He then strode forward, gripped the armrests of the couch, and leaned in. His nostrils flared and his lips peeled back to reveal sharp teeth. “If anything happens to my son…I. Will. Hurt. You.”

Devyn resisted the urge to cower into a corner and met his gaze head on. “You can do that all you want but first you have to prove I had something to do with this. I didn’t. You’re wasting your time, and I’m tired of telling you that.”

“Shit.” He turned his back to the door and strode back to the window.

Tears pricked at the back of her eyes. He’d made love to her a few hours ago. Couldn’t he tell how much she loved him? Damn him. She wasn’t going to waste her emotions on someone who didn’t care about her. Not anymore. If he didn’t trust her, she couldn’t even imagine a future with him. Keran marched out of the room, and she could tell he did it to walk off some of the frustration that radiated off him. She leaned back and rubbed her temples.

Martin cleared his throat. “You’re not scared of Keran.”

She shrugged. “What’s to be scared of? I haven’t done anything wrong.”

“No, I mean…a few hours ago you didn’t know he was a shape-shifter, but now you know. Doesn’t it make you frightened to think there’s an animal trapped inside of him, inside me too?”

She glanced at him. “I don’t know you. If you shifted in front of me, yes, I would be scared, but Keran—he isn’t capable to hurting me.”

“He’s a serious, aggressive man and he lost his son.”

“And I feel sorry for the people who kidnapped Justin because I know Keran will do whatever is necessary to bring back his son. If he hurts those men, it’s something they deserve. I would hurt them too, if I had a chance. It’s not right to take a child away from his parent just because they want to gain some money or control…or whatever the hell they’re after.” She rubbed her hand on the armrest of the couch. “But I don’t think he would hurt me.”

“You have a lot of confidence in the man who’s accusing you of kidnapping his son.”

She didn’t have a reply. Devyn wanted to hate Keran for what he did to her. He made her believe they had a chance of having a future together and then pulled the rug out from under her feet. It wasn’t fair. But how could she harbor negative emotions for him when he was hurting far more than she could imagine? His son was his life, and he’d lost him because of her carelessness. She recalled how frightened she was when he came inside the house after he got the news. She’d expected that he would unleash a tirade at her. Instead, he was understanding. He believed in her at that moment.

  She couldn’t forget that.

  No.

She would try to remember all the good things he did, so she could support him. Sure, he hated her, but she wanted only the best for him and Justin. Once his son was back, she would be out of his life and then she could afford the luxury of hating him at leisure.

Devyn looked at Martin and leaned forward. “I’m sure you’re good at what you do. If you weren’t, Keran wouldn’t have hired you. If you want, you can look at me up and down, backward and forward, but it really won’t achieve anything. I didn’t do anything. The only thing you’re accomplishing by looking at me is wasting time, and that’s not productive. Give the kidnappers what they want and we’re done. Later on, you can investigate me all you want.”

“We already know who has Justin, and they don’t want money.”

She was surprised to hear that. Not money? What else could it be? Of course, Keran was a resourceful man. Perhaps they wanted him to do a favor for them, or something illegal. He would of course do anything possible for his son, even if that meant he had to get on the wrong side of the law. “What do they want?” Devyn wasn’t sure if Martin would share that with her. Maybe it was some kind of a secret.

He ran a hand over his brow. “They want him.”

  “What?”

“They want Keran to exchange himself for Justin.”

She still couldn’t understand. It didn’t make any sense. “But—why would they do that? Once Keran is with them, no one can pay the ransom for him because no one else has the authority to give money.”

“As I said before, they’re not after money. You don’t know much about shape-shifting wolves?”

“Keran is the first I met.”

He stood and strolled over to the window. “Shape-shifters are territorial, just like ordinary wolves. For decades, there has been a struggle for power in this area. Keran’s father kept the other group in control and didn’t let them infringe on our territory. Keran did the same. Now the Connors have come up with another plan. We believe they hired the Wolverines, a nomad pack of shape-shifters, who are ready to make mischief. Perhaps the Connors promised them a part of this territory. We don’t know. All we’re aware of is that they’ve demanded that Keran turn himself in and they would let go of Justin.”

A chill coursed through her body. “But what would they do with him once they have him?”

Martin turned to face her. His eyes were cold, expressionless, the tilt of his lips told of how he was trying hard not to show what he really felt. “They will kill him.”

She shot straight up off the couch. “What! Why?”

“Keran is the leader of our pack. If he isn’t there anymore, our pack would be without an Alpha and naturally, it would become easier for someone else to take his place.”

She couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe. This was a plot to kill Keran. Since they couldn’t get to him, they took his son. Of course, they were aware that he would do anything for his onl
y child. Damn it. These men—shape-shifters—were cunning, and they were dangerous. This wasn’t a game for money but for power, and they didn’t care who died in their path to glory. “Kill him? But—he shouldn’t go then.”

“He will. That is Keran. Do you really think he’ll allow them to kill his son?”

It was impossible for her to reason this out. There had to be way. Surely, this wasn’t the end of this struggle. “But if Keran dies, one of you could take his place as Alpha. His death wouldn’t diminish the power of the whole pack.”

Martin nodded. “True enough. One of us could take over, but it’s my personal opinion that none of us have the same abilities as him. Keran was born to do this. He was trained and he knows how to handle a business and a pack of aggressive shape-shifters. With him gone, they would take over the trust. It was set up to help the shape-shifters, and then they would overcome the resistance and claim this as their territory. With him out of the way, they could do whatever they wanted.”

“But that’s…” Unable to complete the thought, she walked over to the window and joined him. Devyn was speechless. She didn’t expect this. The whole situation was far grimmer than she realized. Keran’s life was in danger, and if they didn’t do anything, he would sacrifice himself to save his son. She wasn’t sure if that was the right move, but there was no way she could convince Keran of that.

The man she loved stood at the brink of death and there wasn’t a damn thing she could do to save him.

  Not a thing.

  Chapter Two

Keran ground his molars so hard his jaw hurt. The men who took his only child away from him were asking for their deaths. He wouldn’t spare any of them. Despite the unusual power he was blessed with, he never used it to break the law. He’d always been an upstanding citizen but now he would have to do whatever was necessary to bring his son home. Safe and sound. The longer Justin stayed with them, the more his life was in danger.
