  He laughed.

She didn’t know what she had said that was so funny but she enjoyed the way his deep laughter reverberated around her. It warmed her insides. It had been far too long since he enjoyed life. Ever since Roger’s death, he’d retreated into this shell, but she was happy he was coming out now.

“Devyn, you’re priceless. You don’t think I’m scary? I mean, you saw me shift. Didn’t you—weren’t you even a little bit scared?”

Now, how was she supposed to respond to something like that? “A bit, I suppose. I was scared you might get hurt, but I wasn’t afraid of you.”

He lifted her hand and kissed it. Tears of mirth floated in his eyes.

She felt glad that he was having fun, but she couldn’t figure out why he was so amused by what she said. Did he think she should have been scared?

Or perhaps he thought she was too naive?

Whatever it was, Devyn felt a fission of unease. There was something different about Keran today, and she couldn’t figure out what it was. It unnerved her and put her on guard. Something was going to happen. He was planning something and she didn’t have any idea of what it was.

  Chapter Twenty

The empty feeling in the pit of his stomach made matters worse. Keran was never this nervous. Bringing her here was part of his plan. It wasn’t just that he wanted to spend time with her, but more than that, he wanted to make sure he never had to live without her. She was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.

As the date progressed, he was happy to see that she was enjoying herself. The waiters served the food and then withdrew to a distance. He would have preferred if they weren’t around, but it would’ve been hard for him to serve on his own since they were so far away from the restaurant. He enjoyed the way she laughed, her smile, and her innate confidence. He loved everything about her. After coffee was served, the waiters finally left them alone.

  He watched her sip. “Good?”

  “It’s amazing.”

“They get the beans from Italy.”

She quirked an eyebrow. “And how would you know that?”

Keran made a sweeping gesture with his hand. “I’m part owner of this place,” he confessed.

She gaped. “What? Why didn’t you tell me this before?”

“Nothing to tell. I bought the shares ages ago. Now I own about thirty percent of this property. It was a sound investment and it has paid off a lot since then.”

She shook her head as she finished her coffee. “I don’t know how you keep track of all these businesses.”

“I don’t do it alone. I can’t. It’s a team effort, and I’m just lucky to have a good one in place.”

“It’s got nothing to do with luck and more to do with management,” she countered. “You treat your people well and that’s why they stay on and work hard.”

  “All except Roger.”

“One bad apple doesn’t make you a failure.”

He laughed, amused by the casual way in which she stated such wisdom. “You’re right. I’m going to have to stop thinking about Roger. The man is a part of our past, and now we’re ready to begin our future.”

“And what have you planned for the future?”

It was the perfect opportunity. Subconsciously, he patted his pocket to make sure the box was there. It was. “Why don’t we take a walk? It’s a lovely weather and this is a beautiful place.”

If she was surprised by his change of topic, she didn’t show it. Instead, she stood. “That sounds like a great idea. I wish I had worn better shoes.”

He looked down at her high heels. The sight of her painted toes made him feel too warm inside. Desire careened through his veins. It was amazing that she could reduce him to this state without even meaning to do so. He’d never been so fully captivated by a woman before, and while it was a strange and unnerving prospect, Keran was actually enjoying it.

He liked the way she made him feel.

It was invigorating to feel so helpless about his emotions. Only with her, he could accept those feelings and actually revel in them. “We’ll stay on the pavement,” he suggested.

She gazed at him and then at the beach. It was empty. At this time of the evening, not a single person remained on it. The light of the moon was enough for them to see the ocean and the trees that filtered the view from the hotel. Devyn bent, unbuckled her shoes, and slipped them off. “Actually, I prefer to walk on the sand. If you don’t mind, that is.”

“I don’t mind.” He toed his shoes and socks. It felt a little funny, but it was also exhilarating. He could enjoy doing these little things with her which he’d never contemplated doing with another woman. “Shall we?”

She tucked her hand under his arm as they made their way to the beach. The scenario was even more perfect than he imagined. The smooth sand under their feet, the moon that danced in the sky, the crashing waves of the ocean. It was the perfect opportunity for him to say what he had in his mind.

  Yes, she might reject him.

If that were the case, he would have to live with the knowledge that she didn’t love him like he loved her, but at least he would have tried. All he wanted was a chance to make them a true family. They stood in front of the ocean. He could see her dress was getting dirty and wet, but she didn’t seem to mind. Strands of her hair whipped around her head. He tucked back a few strands as she turned to face him. His breath caught in his throat. With her, his life was complete. “Devyn, I…” He faltered. Nervous? Yes, he was. This was the most important moment in his life, and he didn’t want to mess things up. “I love you.”

Her eyes sparkled as she gazed at him.

He took her hands in his.

  “I love you too.”

“Ever since you came into my life, everything has been perfect.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Kidnapping. Attacks. Threats. Are you sure everything has been perfect?” She laughed. “Yes, I know. Despite all that, it has been perfect. I’m very happy with you.”

“Same here. And since we both feel that way, I think we should do something to make that feeling p-permanent.” He shook his head. Keran never had problems with words before but suddenly he was running short of them. “I mean—what I want to s-say is…”

  “Tell me.”

He was nervous. She could stomp on his heart in one swift move. If she did so, he didn’t know if he would be able to recover from that blow. “I know that it’s not easy to live with me. As a werewolf, as a busy man, I’m not the best companion. There’s always a lot going on in my life. My pack is important and sometimes, I have to pay attention to them when I should be devoting that time to my family, but…I have to be as loyal to them as I am to you or to Justin…”

She frowned. “Are you saying you can’t be with me because of your pack?”

Confused, he stared her. It wasn’t possible for him to make a bigger mess of things. He was going off on a tangent when he should be telling her what was in his heart. “No, that’s not what I’m saying.”

“If you want to break up with me, do it now.”

He opened his mouth and closed it. He was an idiot. “I don’t want to break up with you. I actually want to ask you—tell you—I would be honored if you would agree to become my wife.”

  She stared at him.

He didn’t have a clue as to what she was thinking.

Suddenly, she laughed. “You’re asking me to marry you?”

“Yes. I know it’s a difficult decision and you might want to take some time.” He dropped down to one knee. “But I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. You’re the only woman for me.” Now that the words came, he couldn’t stop them. “Ever since I met you, I haven’t thought of anyone else. When you’re with me, I feel that my family is complete. I can’t imagine being without you.”

  “Yes.”

For a long moment, her words didn’t sink in. “Yes? You’re saying yes?”

  Devyn nodded. “I’m saying yes.”

/>   Keran fumbled in his pocket and withdrew the ring. He presented it to her. When she held her hand out, he slipped it on her finger. It sparkled in the silver light of the moon. “

He couldn’t believe his good luck.

Her laughter filled his ears. “Of course, I’ll marry you.”

Keran stood. He swept her into his arms and spun her around. Everything was perfect. Now his life was on the right track. “Wow! I’m the happiest man alive.”

  “And I’m the happiest woman.”

Their lips fused together in a kiss as he lowered her. His arms tightened around her back. He’d imagined a scenario where he would walk back with her and make love to her on their bed. It had been far too long since he touched her, and his patience was near an end. Now that he held her, he didn’t want to let go. His hands roamed over her beautifully voluptuous body and desire burned deep within his veins.

He eased the zipper of her dress down.

She drew back with a gasp. “Here?”

He couldn’t stop the laughter from erupting. Keran looked around. There was no one else on the beach. Sometimes it was good to be spontaneous, and he was in the mood. “We’re alone. There’s just you, me, the moon, the sand, and the ocean.” He chuckled. “This is the definition of perfection.”

“I’ve never done it outside before.”

“There’s always a first time for everything, and this is yours.” His hands settled on her shoulders as he pulled down her dress. It pooled around her ankles. The sight of her breasts, clad only in a flimsy, white bra and the matching panties made him nearly delirious with need. His nerve endings stirred and tingled with need.

He simply couldn’t wait anymore. Keran shucked off his clothes and tossed them on the sand. His hands slipped up her back and he unclasped her bra. Her breasts swung free. His erection stood at attention. Her fingers curled around it, and he actually felt the rush of blood as it shifted down to his hard organ. Bending his head, he clamped his mouth on her nipple. His fingers dug into her skin as he held her close.

“Keran,” she breathed out his name.

Her voice only served to enhance the passion that gripped him. They both slid to the sand while his mouth remained focused on her nipple. Her flavor kept him prisoner. He licked and caressed her hard bud until she began to moan and pant. His cock dug into her thighs. He rubbed it over her velvety center and was delighted when she nearly jumped off the ground.

  She was ready.

  And so was he.

Keran turned his attention to her other breast. The scent of her engulfed him. He’d waited so long for this moment, and now he intended to savor it as much as possible. She shivered as he kneaded her large, firm breast. Her dark, large nipples hardened. Lifting his head, he gazed into her eyes. They boasted the same need that boiled through his blood. His lips claimed hers and their tongues twisted in an old erotic dance which left him breathless. Gently, he parted her legs with his knee. The tip of his shaft pushed at the edge of her satiny center, and her hands clenched his shoulders. Her fingernails dug into his muscles but he hardly felt the pain of it.

She ran her hands down his body and cupped his buttocks. “I love you,” she said.

“I love you, baby.” He slipped inside her. “Need you, too.” Her sheath stretched to accommodate him. Her legs wrapped around his butt as she held him with all her might. He was now joined to her. Keran basked in the glory of the moment. This was divine. Putting his hands on the sand, he lifted his body. He slipped out. Slathered in her juices, he was slick, hard. He pushed it in again. The sensations that raced through his body held him captive.

She moaned. Her tongue dove out to lick her lips.

The sight of her arousal drove him insane. A low growl escaped his lips. Even though he couldn’t wait to reach the end of this road, Keran was determined to give her a ride she wouldn’t forget. The sand was soft and smooth under the tips of his fingers. Her breath mingled with his as they both tried to maintain the same rhythm. His hips moved in and out, while she replicated the same motion. It was a match made in heaven. He could sense her need, as desperate as his, and strove to sate it. Her fingers caressed his skin while she remained lost in a world that sucked him in. Low moans escaped her lips. She lifted her head and licked his shoulder. The touch of her tongue on his skin felt like fire. Her teeth sank into his muscle and the sweet bite of pain enhanced his arousal.

She fell back. Her head moved from side to side.

Keran watched her. He wanted to see the glorious expression on her face when she finally achieved nirvana. Every gesture she made, every sigh she uttered, was important to him. In and out, he moved at a breakneck speed. Her muscles clutched him and then expanded. He was rewarded when she uttered a loud cry and erupted under him. Finally, he closed his eyes and allowed himself to reach the climax he so desperately craved. He exploded within her depths. If he collapsed on her, she might have gotten hurt. Keran kept his body off her as he looked down at her.

  His woman.

There were no words to describe what he felt. She was his for now, and for all eternity. “Mine,” he said.

As if she understood what he needed, Devyn smiled. Her hand caressed his cheek. “I’m yours,” she said. “And you’re mine.”

Their fate was sealed. The happily ever after that just began would continue forever. They were one, and there wasn’t anything anyone could do to drive them apart. Keran was in heaven, and it was perfect.
