Affairs of the Heart Page 23

by Maggie Ford

“Would you buy them out if you did have enough?” he asked. But Edwin was still gazing at Helen, she gazing back, their regard of each other not diminishing one bit.

Becoming aware that his host was speaking to him, Edwin forced his attention away from the girl and with an effort attempted to concentrate on the older man’s question. “Sorry, Mr Goodridge, what was that?” His mind was even now in danger of swinging back to Helen.

“If you had enough to buy them out,” William repeated, “would you?”

The eyes of both young people were entwined again, if eyes could be that, but he heard the distracted response, “Yes.” Glancing from one to the other, William smiled. The wheel had turned full circle.

As though to prove it, Edwin looked momentarily away from Helen to him. “Mr Goodridge, would you mind if I asked Helen to go to a party with me?” Not waiting for a reply, he turned back to Helen. “Would you?”

Seeing her nod eagerly, her grey eyes bright, William picked up his drink and sipped it reflectively. As though planned by some divine wisdom, Geoffrey’s son and Henry’s natural daughter would inherit the business of their fathers. It was as it should be. And by the look of these two young people, exactly how it would be – he could bet his last penny on it.
