She removed her helmet and ran her fingers through her long, black hair. “I shouldn’t have crossed them. That put you in danger.”
“But Mum, you always said to stand up for what you feel is right.”
“Yes, I know. But sometimes you have to realize that the right thing for you may not be the right thing for everyone involved. In this case, I should have …oh, I don’t know what I should have done.”
We were in unchartered territory. She never wavered in her decision making. She never doubted herself. And I never questioned her judgement. Not even at this point.
She must have seen the confusion on my face.
“I just didn’t want to leave you alone for such a long time, especially with your father already on miserably long assignment.”
For the first time I could remember, my mother shed tears. Her voice trembled as she spoke. Her hand shook as she covered her mouth and squeezed her eyes shut.
“It’ll be all right, Mum. They can’t hurt you.”
She shot me a wide-eyed look. She pursed her lips to control the quivering. The naturally dark skin tone of my mother’s face was paler than I had ever seen it. “What makes you so sure?”
“Dad says you’re the best at what you do. He tells me that every time you’re gone and I begin to worry about you.”
Those words seemed to affect her deeply. She paused, her head nodding slowly. A tiger-like ferocity returned to her dark eyes. “Your father’s right, of course. I am very good at what I do. I’ve managed this far. I’ll continue managing. Come now, let’s not dither around here any longer.”
She pulled her helmet back over her head and indicated for me to do the same.
“I’ll not let them do anything to hurt you. And that includes taking your mother.”
About the Author
Glen Robins enjoys a good adventure. If he’s not participating in one, he’s writing or reading about one. From a young age, he learned to love the outdoors. This love of adventure has spurred much of his writing.
Mr. Robins and his wife are both native Californians. They continue to live in the Bay Area. He currently has three grandchildren.
The characters in “Chosen Path,” while fictional, have a basis in real life people that Mr. Robins has met. Their stories, experiences, and attributes have found their way into the characters and situations in this novel. The aim of this book is first and foremost entertainment. But a secondary goal is to help the reader gain an appreciation for the people, culture, and history of Korea and the importance of current events on the Korean Peninsula and how they have the potential to become a factor of global significance.
