"I never stopped loving you, Els," Nancy said to her gently. "No woman I've ever met matched up to you. Which probably explains why I've always put my career before my personal life, and so been a singleton for most of it," she said with a shrug.
"I never forgot about you either," Elsie said painfully. She had lived thirty-two years in darkness. If that wasn't hell, she didn't know what was. She had let her mind be twisted and moulded by others' beliefs, instead of drawing on personal strength to form her own.
"My daughter is getting married," she said quickly, the change of subject quelling the tears.
"I see, so that's the special occasion. Is he a nice man?"
"He's a woman," she said proudly, "and yes, she is very nice." Nancy raised her eyebrows and smiled in surprise.
"I'm very happy to hear that. Talking of happiness..." she said, leaning forward conspiratorially.
"Yes?" Elsie said, leaning to meet her halfway.
"If I recall correctly, the last time I was truly happy, we got rudely interrupted."
"We did indeed," Elsie said, playing along.
"Well, I was wondering..." she said, her voice trailing off. Elsie felt like an excited schoolgirl.
"Yes?" she said quietly.
"If I were to make you a promise, would you care to help me re-create that moment in time again?" Elsie looked stern.
"That really all depends on the promise." Nancy took her gently by the hand.
"That we'll have no interruptions this time," she said, with a twinkle in her eye. Elsie didn't need to answer. Her smile said it all.
