“Because someone,” thundered Blue, “didn’t think to load the magazines.”
“What magazines?” said Pak in a quiet voice.
Blue said nothing, but as Midnight Sun broke off pursuit and looped around back to Station-Five, the cutaway diagram in her CIC zoomed into the stern of the ship. It highlighted shrouded mechanisms near the cannon chambers.
“Those four-round ready magazines,” Blue explained. “And I won’t even bother to mention the twenty-round replenishers they’re linked to.”
Even secure inside his CASPer, Sun could sense astonishment emanating from Pak.
“You, Sergeant,” said Blue, swiveling her chair around to fix him with a stare over her data shades. “Are you going to offer my sister a job?”
“She’s proven her worth. Yes, I will recommend her to First Sergeant Landers.”
Blue grinned. “In that case, I accept Gloriana’s offer of employment. I am now the commander of the Midnight Sun Free Company and captain of this fine vessel. After the darkness comes the light, and if that light comes in eccentric flavors, then that just adds to the excitement, eh? Now that we have a proper name, and have stopped treating our prize asset as a caged lunatic, we can get on with the honest business of killing the bad guys and getting paid.”
She winked at the two CASPers. “Who’s coming with me?”

You've just read Thrill Addict, a novelette set in the Four Horsemen Universe (4HU).
