Vampire's Crucible Page 34

He’d made his argument too many times already. His brother wouldn’t listen.

The Cadillac pulled out of the drive and into the sunset. If he was lucky, Jack’s car wouldn’t pass them on the road.

“Sergey and his personal guard are in the main hall,” Bryce said. The man had served Braden loyally for over a century, and the elder rewarded him handsomely for it.

“Let’s not keep him waiting.” The soles of his leather shoes tapped on the hardwood floors as they entered the main hall. “Sergey, it’s good to see you alive.”

“I don’t have time for games, Braden,” the Russian sneered. “My life is forfeit when Jack arrives. I’m trusting you to ensure that Shaw takes my place.” He waved at the man to his right.

The elder settled into the nearest chair and leaned back. “Who shall I offer as a distraction?” he asked. “Jack will not pick my suggestion.”

  “I don’t care,” he rumbled.

“Who is your least favorite?” Braden suggested.

“Hans is completely incompetent and disrespected by my men,” he replied.

Perfect, Braden thought and smiled at the Russian. “What did you need to tell me before Jack’s untimely visit?”

“He knows of your betrayal,” Sergey replied. “I don’t know who told him, but he knows.”

Braden’s smile vanished. Alisandra had been right. Was it too late to call her back? He palmed the phone in his pocket as the door to his hall opened. His brother entered the room with two dozen men following him, including the other council members. He sent a quick text to Gordon, the code to evacuate. One of his people had to survive.

“All of my traitors in one room,” Jack slurred, already taking his full vampire form. “Let’s make it fun, boys.”
