Set Me Alight Page 15

by Leviathan, Bill

She got up, walked past me, and out the door. I half hoped she would stop and turn around, allowing one last exchange of eye contact before we finally parted ways, but that wasn’t the case. She just upped and left to start a new life, no longer under the thumb of Mr. Plunder. I’m sure the sob story she told me about her and her father was made up, just like everything else she had ever told me, but that was a lie I chose to continue to believe. One way or another I doubt she did what she did out of malice or her own choosing. Like Mr. Plunder said, only a chosen few lived their lives the way they wanted. The rest of us had to fight for the scraps that were left behind. I hoped that it was all about to change, but I wasn’t about to hold my breath over it. Whatever happened as a result of all the shit Paul started, it was going to be painful, for everyone.

Now, time to sort through all these documents.
