“He turned out to be a good guy. Much like Cutter.”
Laughing, I shake my head. “Cutter is not a good guy. Trust me on that.”
Isabelle goes up on her tiptoes and kisses me lightly. “He is to us.”
“Are you okay?” I ask her.
“With you here and Charlotte safe, I’m better than just okay. For the first time in a long time, maybe ever, I’ve found a home.”
“It’s the same for me. Wherever you are is home, here or at my place, I only need you.” I kiss her on the lips. “Love isn’t meant to be hard. I wake up every day and choose you. You’re mine, and I’m yours. Simple.”
Lochlan
I’ve been in Boston for a month, settling the last details for opening my wellness clinic. The woman warming my bed is no one. Rolling over, I hit her on the ass, and she yelps.
“Time for you to go, Sabine.”
“Why, it’s early. We could still have some fun?”
I grin up at the ceiling. “No, we can’t. I have work tomorrow.”
Sabine stands and stretches her body. She looks down at me and winks, then walks into the bathroom of the suite where I’m staying.
There’s a knock at the door, and I curse under my breath. Sabine must have ordered room service.
I throw on a robe and yell out, “Just a minute!”
Quickly, I tie it and rush for the door. Standing on the other side is Annette. She has tears streaming down her face, and she steps forward, throwing her arms around me.
“Annette, what are you doing here? And what’s wrong?”
I bend to peer into her eyes.
“It’s Annie, s-she died.”
Annie is her grandmother and my family’s oldest friend. My heart hurts at the thought of her passing.
“Oh, sweetheart.” I guide her inside and sit her on a chair. “How?”
She shakes her head. “I thought I’d surprise you with a visit, and I called her when my plane landed. Kyle answered the phone. He said they’d been trying to ring her all day, and when they went to check on her, she was still in bed. At first, he thought she was asleep.”
Annette sobs and I try to console her. “What can I do?”
“Can you come home with me? Help me with the arrangements?”
“Of course, love, of course, I can do that.”
Annette’s eyes go past me, and it’s then I remember Sabine. I close my eyes and sigh. When I open them, Annette’s tears have stopped, and she rises. “Who are you?”
“I’m Sabine.”
Annette looks down at me. “Who is she?”
“Annette, it’s not what it looks like.”
“And if by that you mean have we been fucking? Yes, we have.” Sabine picks up her purse and walks to the door. “Call me.” She winks at Annette and strolls out of my hotel suite.
Annette walks to the door.
“Annette, please, can we talk about this?”
She doesn’t turn around, but she says quietly, “It’s funny, when this happened, you were the one person I wanted to be with. I know how much you loved my grandmother and she you. Do you have any idea how much you would have disappointed her? Or for that matter me?”
“Please, don’t go.”
“I never want to see you again.” She opens the door and slams it closed.
This isn’t good.
My brothers are going to kill me.
Annette is off-limits, and I broke that rule, and now I’ve betrayed her.
If God himself doesn’t strike me down, then the MacKenny brothers just might.
