The Abandoned Hamster Page 5

by Tina Nolan

Katie nodded. “I used to whistle to Daisy and she’d come to the front of her cage. Do you think I can teach Harry to do that?”

“Yes, cool.” Eva couldn’t tell who was happiest – herself, Katie or Harry. “Make that five!” She grinned at Karl, who was taking Harry’s name off the website. Five rehomings in one day!

“And you can come and see Harry whenever you like,” Katie told Eva.

“Tomorrow?” Eva asked in a flash. She held the door open for Julia Platt to carry the cage out to the car. “What time?”

“I’ll see you at school to arrange it,” Katie promised, hurrying out to the car.

Five! Hugo, Benji, Bernie, Mitch and, best of all, Harry! Eva waved goodbye to Katie as her mum drove off.

And now her dad was crossing the yard towards the surgery with a person Eva recognized – a dark-haired woman – oh yes, Jen Andrews!

“Meet our new assistant,” Mark announced. “Jen’s going to replace Joel.”

“Welcome to Animal Magic!” Heidi smiled at Jen, standing in the doorway with Joel, Karl and Eva beside her.

“Yes, and good luck,” Joel added. “You’ll need it if you’re going to work with this animal-mad family!”

Jen nodded then smiled as her eyes settled on Eva’s happy face. “I have a good feeling about this place,” she said. “I’m sure I’m going to be very happy here!”
