The Night Walkers Page 18

The witch hissed at her, then wacked her in the face, making her clench her jaw tightly with the pain.

“Where are you taking me? Where is Levi?” She was wondering these questions and they were buzzing on her mind like crazy, where was Levi?

“Shut up and get in your cell! Questions shall be answered shortly, not now though… not when master is busy making his sacrifice.” The hag pulled open the same cell as she had had only days before.

Remembering the suffering and the horror she went through back then made her feel suddenly anxious.

The witch threw her into the cell with forceless effort. “Stay in there, shut up, don’t ask questions and we will get along just fine!” the witch squelched.

Although Kit wanted to say a billion words that she probably didn’t know were within her vocabulary. After opening her mouth, she decided to close it, knowing her argument would never suffice.

“Now stay,” the witch locked the cage and planted the keys on a hook near the door. Then door was far too out of reach for her, and she tried her best to not be to angry.

The hag stepped outside into the freezing air, closing her into darkness.

Suddenly, when she was alone in the cold cell, with the gathering dirt fraying her perfect armoured clothing, she thought back to the hag’s words.

Shut up and get in your cell! Questions shall be answered shortly, not now though… not when master is busy making his sacrifice.

  Wait… a sacrifice?

In that one moment, everything in her mind slipped away, rage was bulging within her because her only thought was who this sacrifice was, and the only explanation was…

  Levi.

No matter how much Kit tapped on the door, or punched the wall, or through her body against that damned door, nothing worked! Nothing allowed her to be free. Nothing wanted her to get to Levi. Nothing wanted her to have a break.

It was stupid of her and Levi to have come tonight. They should have stayed back in the Academy with everyone else whilst they all got prepared to fight.

A tear suddenly ran down her cheeks, hot and warm against her freezing pale skin. She wanted to badly to curl up against Levi and feel his heartbeat again. What she wanted was something, or someone to know she was there, to know she was alive.

Before she had another chance to run up and barrel down the door, it opened to reveal illuminate light, filtering in like a sudden source of a second sun. Her eyes turned to slits as the figure stood there.

“Claudius?” She spat, standing up abruptly from her stance on the ground by the wall. Any moment, she was going to rush past him and run to Levi.

“Kit Stone, would you please come with me to dinner? I have a lot to talk to you about.” He pulled his arms over his broad chest and began staring her down.

“What? Her mouth gaped open. “You have done so much to me! And now you want me to come to dinner with you?” She leaned against the wall, thinking over a very quick plan. Maybe she could cause a distraction while she was there, leaving her the perfect chance to find Levi in whatever short time she had.

“Indeed, there is something very important I must tell you… well, a few things actually. Care to come?”

She hated him, and she knew her knew she did. He was ridiculous! He’d tormented her in every possible way, wanting her to feel nothing but pity over herself.

“Hmm,” she thought to herself. She had a lot of questions to ask, but she was not going to make any eye contact with him or smile or laugh, she will not eat any of his food even. “… Fine!” She crossed her arms daintily over her chest.

  He smiled, “follow me Kit.”

She sat on the other end of the large table, keeping her hands in her lap, gripping a silver knife with every bit of energy she had left. She reframed herself as best she could not to throw the knife across the table and hit him in the heart.

“Now Kit, I must ask you, where did you get the name Kitara from? Which parent named you?” He was grinning again, and it was horrid.

She looked away, not wanting to discuss her parents! “I haven’t met them, except my professor told me once that he said my father named me, and he didn’t even tell me anything about who my father was.”

Claudius smiled, “interesting, do you know why your father named you that?”

She shook her head, “I just told you, I’ve never met him before.”

He was quite clearly smirking now, “but Kit! Don’t you understand, I’m your father. It’s why you weren’t affected that time you got scratched by me during our very first encounter. It’s why you have extra speed than everyone. Have you ever realized you had an ability to control people with your eyes?”

Kit didn’t know what to say, it was impossible, and she knew he was obviously joking, there was no common grounds with the two of them. But Kit couldn’t shake the idea that he was right, she wasn’t affected by his scratch and she did that weird manipulative thing with her eyes.

She stood up and aimed the knife at him. “That’s it! I have had enough of this, if you don’t stop this madness I will shut you up myself!” She was yelling know, hearing the power consuming her whole.

He smiled widely, making her eyes narrow into two deadly slits.

“Trust me, you’re just like me, can’t stop yourself from being mad. You are half Hybrid after all.” He stuck his talented fingers out, waving them at her. “You see? We are the same Kit, I am you and you are me- “

“No! We are not! I am not a- a Hybrid!” She exclaimed and threw the knife, she threw it so fast that it hit the wall just behind him, pinning into the stone wall.

“You see?” Claudius gestured towards to knife. “You are your father’s daughter after all.” He smirked, standing to pluck out the knife.

She rolled her eyes with a growl and stormed out of the room, never in her life had she expected to have news this bad

“Oh Kit!” He called, watching her a she turned around pointedly. “I am the Alpha and Omega. I controlled her beginning and I intend to control your end as well.”

  CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

  (Levi's P.O.V)

“Let me out!” Levi bashed his fists against the cell door even though he knew it was useless. They were probably going to kill him, he didn’t know about Kit though. Hopefully they let her live, that settled his explosive head.

Shut up in there!” A voice commanded through the bars. He sighed and shoved his back against the wall; sliding down until he sat on the ground in a pile of dirt… he was going to die down here.

“What are you doing with Kit?” He asked, craning his head to look at the sharp silhouette.

There was a long pause before the voice spoke again. “No Levi, I mean shut up, so I can save you!” The voice called back from the darkness.

  What…

“Who are you!?” He stood up straight now and walked over towards the edge of the bars until his face was pressed between them. “If you don’t answer I swear I’ll- “

“It’s Sally, now please be quiet, it isn’t exactly easy trying to bust open metal bars!” She complained. He was having a hard time trying to think of why she was trying to bust open the bars instead of getting out the keys.

“Thanks Sally, I really do appreciate it, but why not just use to keys over by the door?” He pointed his finger to the door with a smirk.

“Oh,” she replied, and the sound of feet shuffling was heard before she came back, pressing her face to the bars. “Listen Levi, Kit’s in trouble, I know she is. I also know that you’ll be in trouble if you don’t listen to me now.” The cell door opened revealing the sharp outline of Sally.

“Thank you Sally,” he repeated, drawing her into a friendly hug. She was surprised at first, but she willingly hugged him back.

“No problem,” she saw a swift wink back.

“Now take me through the plan, hurry before someone finds out,” he hurried her over to the corner, locking the cell door closed so it looks like he was still
in there.

“Okay, we have to get out of here, pronto, so I was thinking in the short time I had getting here, and I came up with it! What we need to do is get through the vents! If you think about it, we won’t be noticed and there are vents running through here. It will be kind of hard getting in and out though,

“So, do you get what I’m saying? We can get through the vents, rescue Kit, go back to the Academy and… hmm, wait, should we maybe Kill Claudius first? I was spying on him through the vents so maybe we can spy on him some more!” She clapped her hands on his shoulders and shook him awake.

“Sally… I don’t know about spying,” he rubbed his neck nervously, then blew out a soft sigh. “Fine, alright, I’ll go with you, but if you get hurt then I-I have to leave Kit here, there is no way I’m risking everyone turning out like Stacy… wait, oh my god, we forgot about Stacy!”

Levi saw her eyes widen, “yeah, that’s true, we’ll sort that out later though, for now let’s find Kit, follow me.”

  * * * * * *

First, the vents were all stuffy and hot, secondly, Levi was having a hard time concentrating because he couldn’t stop thinking through ways to save Kit and kill Claudius.

“Levi!” Sally slapped his shoulder. “Down there,” she pointed through an opening of the vent. Down there though, was not only Claudius, but Kit as well. Why wasn’t she attacking him? She just stood there with her arms crossed over her chest. Her cheeks were slightly red like she’d been slapped in the face or punched.

“What’s Kit doing? She’s not even attacking him!” Sally whispered loudly over the cacophony of voices below.

“Listen to their conversation.” He instructed. She nodded and leaned in against the metal wall.

“Kitara, I understand that you’re confused right now, but I must tell you that I am being truthful, you’re my daughter,” Claudius said, standing up from his chair. What!? Kit can’t be his daughter! Levi thought anxiously.

“I can’t be your daughter, I mean, I want to kill you right now and from memory I don’t think that’s what daughters do,” she shrugged her shoulders and looked around.

“Why would you kill me, honestly Kit?” Claudius strode over to her until he began circling around her. “You would have my eyes if it weren’t for your mother and your Academy.” He leaned over and picked a piece of hair off her shoulder. “The same hair colour, if you hadn’t always hidden in the shadows.”

She shook her head vigorously and backed away, taking one small heel off the ground.

“Don’t you dare move,” he ordered, watching her as she stood frozen this time.

“Please Claudius!” She begged, “at least let Levi go!” Her voice had begun to whimper, and Levi could see the pain crossing her flawless features.

“No, I need him for an experiment,” the man rubbed his hands together melodically, grinning his normal wolfish grin at her.

Kit spun around to face him, “experiment, what experiment?” She moved closer to him and Levi could just catch the slightest glint of what appeared to be a tear.

“Well, let me just say that he will be the next of out kin,” Claudius left the room after that, leaving Kit – who had sunk to her knees – there alone.

“Wow,” Sally said no more than a heartbeat later. “She’s his daughter! Oh my god, Claudius is doing to come looking for you Levi! We have to get you out of here.”

He shook his head, “Sally, you know I can’t leave Kit here, what do you think he’ll do to her? He has this extreme compulsion and it works even better on her because she is afraid of him. I don’t normally use those words when it involves Kit because she is normally always fearless.”

Sally rubbed dirt off her leather gear, “fine, let’s get Kit and then get out of here.”

“Sounds good, but how do we her attention?” He asked, a bewildered expression crossing his pale face.

“Just you wait, when it’s time, I’ll get her attention,” Sally didn’t say much after that, she just stared straight out towards the place Kit was, her hands on the ground and her tall appearance looking horribly detached.

  “What are you- “

“Shush!” She hushed him. He sat back on his heels and watched Sally with fascination. A moment later she began tapping her fingers melodically against the metal vent. Kit’s head perked up to see what it was, as did the guards.

“It must be raining outside,” the guard said to Kit. “You’re to wait out here, do not move unless your father or I tell you otherwise… or there’ll be trouble.” The guard mumbled in a large gruff voice before storming off through the doors.

The girl on the ground didn’t seem like Kit in that moment, but a helpless afraid girl who didn’t know what to do.

“Kit,” Sally whispered loudly, “over here!” She continued calling this until Kit stood up and began tip toeing around the room, approaching the sound of Sally’s voice every coming second.

“Kit!” Levi joined in this time, and he could tell that she recognized his voice.

“Levi! Sally?” Kit breathed, running up to the vent, her fingers pressing against the other side like ice.

“Kit, come on, get inside, we don’t have much time.” Sally beckoned Kit inside, as did Levi, Only Kit didn’t appear to be as into the idea. She was shaking her head, stepping backwards graciously.

“I can’t go! Don’t you see? He will never stop looking for me until I’m at rest alongside him. He will never stop hassling the school, taking those students – who by the way have already begun their journey as a hybrid!” Kit spat, knowing that she was hurting their feelings.

“But Kit! You must come, what happened to us staying together… always? I promised you that nothing bad was going to happen to you, and I’ll stick by that.” Levi stuck his hand out to her after opening the tiny vent door.

“I can’t Levi!” She whispered, staring at his outstretched hand. “I may have promised that… but now I take everything that I have ever said back! I take it all back, I just need you to go, I want you to be happy Levi, same with you Sally. But you can’t have that if there is always that chance you’ll die in the night!” Kit was whispering louder now, he could feel the intensity enraged within her.

His hand came back to rest at his sides. “Do you take back loving me Kit?” He whispered, his eyes focusing on hers and nothing else. There was a sudden deep pain that shifted across Kit’s face, whether it was a shadow or her own soul, Levi wouldn’t know.

“Yes,” her voice was barely audible as she said that, probably because it pained her like nothing else in the world ever had before, but that look that Levi saw painted on her beautiful features, was utter hurt. She didn’t mean the words deep down, she was only trying to get him to not love her anymore.

“Kit…” he trailed off, unable to keep his shaking voice in check.

“Go!” She ordered quickly, “the guard’s coming back!” She shooed them away, already turning her back and running towards her previous position on the floor.

“Levi! Go,” Sally repeated, trying to get her words through his betrayed mind.

Do you take back loving me Kit? Yes.

“I can’t.” he breathed, and felt her hands hauling him forwards.

“Levi! Hurry, if you don’t you’ll be turned into a hybrid!” She forced her words out at him. He sighed heavily, biting back sudden yells of outrage that was pouring through his veins.

In that moment, he did the unspeakable.

He walked away from his only love.

  * * * * * *

There were many horrible ways to shatter the human heart, you could either take it out of someone and literally shatter it. Or you could use words to make the person feel like their heart is lost or shattered. Unfortunately for Levi though, both things had happened to him. He felt like his heart wasn't there, like it didn't beat.

He was frozen. Time wasn't moving. He wasn't moving. He was like a clock stuck on one time, unable to move until one person made him.

  "I
have told you a billion times that we'll get her back." Sally's voice cut through his reverie, pulling him out of his complete and incessant daze.

"Yeah... but what if she doesn't want to?" He offered, giving Sally a sad look. He didn't like thinking these thoughts, but when they came to his mind he couldn't summon the thoughts away. They always involved Kit is the reason for that.

"She will, once we kill Claudius at least. Now are you with me? We will get the entire school next time! It won't be just us, we will all offer a hand to help, even if it means sacrifice."

"Sally, what if we're outnumbered because what student would want to kill Claudius, considering what he is." Levi told her, running his hand through his dark brown hair.

"Look, if you come with me to Headmistress Sibyl's office then maybe we could arrange a meeting, I heard Syria's back and so are all the other teachers." Sally grabbed his wrist and looked up into his blue eyes. "Please."

He frowned, "but we just got back to the Academy literally four minutes ago!" He interpreted, biting his lip.

"Come on, maybe they'll still let us if we seek help!" She basically dragged him out the door towards the place that couldn't be anything but Headmistress's office.

Yes, he remembered coming here with Kit all that time ago - when the beast first began attacking the school. "Are you sure about this Sally?" He asked, unsureness creeping into his voice.

She turned and nodded and then knocked on headmistress Sibyl's door. "Headmistress, we'd like a word please." Sally spoke into the door where the sound of feet shuffling was heard.

"Sally? Levi? We've been looking all over for sure, where's Kit?" Headmistress said whilst unlocking the door, beckoning them inside with a strange and worried expression on her face.

"She's with Claudius, she wanted us to leave her there. Seemed to not be thinking very clearly today though, she said she didn't want us to get her out of there because Claudius wants here because she's his-his daughter," Levi spoke quickly, his eyes straining on the door handle.

Headmistress's expression was unreadable, surprise and anger were mostly shown though. "His daughter! That's impossible! Claudius must be playing a joke. Kit's mother's name was Lucinda Grey, and her father was Cyrus Stone!" Headmistress covered her shocked expression with the sleeves of her big black dress.
