Sarah had heard from her relieved parents, who now knew that she was safe as well as from her Aunt Miriam, the latter anxious to know how things were going with Jake, to which her reply had been a lot more non-committal than what she was truly feeling currently for her partner and lover.

  EPILOGUE

It was another idyllic day on Waikiki Beach on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii. The sun was already caressingly warm and out to sea, the legions of surfers were lurking in the turquoise water, waiting for the next big wave to come rolling in.

Out on the verandah of their five star hotel suite, Jake and Sarah were just finishing breakfast, relaxing and looking forward to a day exploring the island in their rental car, one that miraculously they didn’t have to steal!

They had been amazed at their apparent notoriety both in the airport, on the way to Hawaii and on arrival at the hotel, but thankfully, the hotel manager had been most discreet in assigning them to the beautiful private suite facing each evening’s spectacular sunset.

Sarah lay back on the recliner in her sexy bikini as Jake was finishing his second cup of Kona coffee, an island favourite. He looked lovingly at Sarah.

  “It’s a nice change!”

  “What is?”

He grinned. “People chasing us to shake hands instead of shooting us!”

“I know what you mean,” she smiled. “You know, Jake, what with Jennings wearing a mask in Israel and Quinn wearing one in Northern Ireland, I keep finding myself doing a double take on anybody we meet who looks the least bit suspicious!”

He grinned. “I know what you mean. I found myself grabbing the bell-boy by the face the other day!”

Jake’s cell phone rang and he answered it. “Hello?”

“Jake, is that you?” a woman’s voice asked. It was Glenda, his deceased wife’s mother. “It’s me, Glenda!”

Jake was pleased to hear from her. “Hello, my love, how are you?”

“Fantastic!” she replied. “That’s why I’m calling you!”

“It is?” Jake was confused. “I’m listening?”

“I just received a check for ten million dollars!” Glenda sounded so excited.

  Jake smiled. “You mean...?”

“Yes,” she replied. “From the Government!”

“That’s great, Glenda, Don’t spend it all at once!” he quipped.

“I’ve already spent five million!” she answered.

He was in shock. “Oh, my God! Already? On what?”

Her reply was simple and to the point. “On you! The check’s on the way!”

  “You’re joking, love?” he replied.

“Hell no, Jake. If it hadn’t been for you, Nancy’s killers would still be at large and you were also the one who got the CLU helping with our case.”

“Are you sure about this, Glenda?” he asked.

“Hey, what am I gonna do with ten million. Now, I’d like you and that lovely partner of yours to relax and smell the roses, that’s what Nancy would have wanted as well. Every time I pick up the paper, you’re out chasing bad guys.”

He was extremely touched. “Well, if you’re really sure about this, love, I’d like to thank you from both of us and as you know, Nancy’s always in my prayers.”

“I know, love,” she replied. “Stop by and see me when you’re in town?”

“We will, Glenda and thanks again.”

  Glenda rang off.

Sarah turned to him. “What was all that about?”

Jake looked at her and smiled. “That was Glenda, Nancy’s mom, she just received ten million dollars from the Government in compensation for Nancy’s death and she’s sent us a check for five million, so we can both relax!”

Sarah had tears in her eyes. “How sweet is that?” she smiled.

“You’d like Glenda,” he added. “I’ll take you to meet her when we get back.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” she smiled. “I was beginning to think the word relaxation had been removed from our vocabulary!”

He nodded in agreement as he topped up their coffee. “Me too, so, let’s go find us some surf!”

  * * *

As Jake and Sarah moved about lazily on the verandah, every move was being observed through powerful binoculars from the balcony of the hotel opposite. A dark-haired, dangerous-looking man, his binoculars in one hand and his cell phone held to his ear with the other, was speaking to someone on the line.

  “I’ve found them!” he reported.
